Paper 3 Assignment: Applying Criticism
For this assignment, you will need to choose either William Faulkner’s “A Rose for
Emily” or Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” as your text to analyze.
After you have made your selection, you will then need to agree, disagree, or qualify your
position with the following essays (see attachment) as they relate to your topic:
1. Ray B. West’s “Atmosphere and Theme in Faulkner’s ‘A Rose for Emily'”
2. Frank Bernhard’s “Frost’s ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening'”
3. Donald Greiner’s “The Indispensable Robert Frost”
If you choose “A Rose for Emily”, then you will necessarily only have to focus on West’s essay.
If you choose Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, then you may use
Bernhard’s essay, Greiner’s essay, or both. These articles are attached beneath this assignment as
.pdf documents.
The objective here is to demonstrate your ability to grapple with the elements of literature
in a given work and respond to criticism. We will cover these critical essays in class to highlight
some of the main arguments from each author. You will need to quote extensively from both the
story or poem as well as the critical essay(s) to defend your position. Attach a works cited page
as usual to document your sources.
If you do not wish to organize your paper by agreeing/disagreeing/qualifying, then you
should state a position about one of the texts and then incorporate the critical essays to either
support your view or as a counterpoint you can then refute. Below are sample thesis statements
to help you form a position.
However you structure your essay, make sure you fully explain your in text citations, so
the reader can follow your reasoning. The required length is a minimum of 3 pages. Your
Works Cited page should feature both the story you are analyzing as well as the text(s) you are
including in your analysis and responding to.
Sample Approaches:
1. As Ray B. West brilliantly points out in Atmosphere and Theme in Faulkner’s A Rose for
Emily”, Emily is trapped in the past, and her interactions with the town and Homer Barron
become warped by her own imprisonment.
2. In Atmosphere and Theme in Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily, Ray B. West accurately describes
Emily as a creature trapped in the past, but he overlooks the evil influence that the townspeople
have on Emily and her warped actions.
