CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
Research Problem
Cloud computing is widely used by most of the organizations whether they are large or
small. Moreover, individuals have also started storing the data on the cloud because of easy
access and no need to maintain the physical storage devices (Chou, 2013). Various software
companies have of this facility for free to the individuals and groups. Some of the Cloud Service
companies are Google Cloud Platform, Adobe Marketing Cloud, Cloud Foundry, OpenShift,
BOSH, etc. In the past decade, Cloud Computing has evolved from being something which is
promised to be provided by the provider company if the services are adapted by the user, to the
lifeblood of most of the individuals and organizations (Amanfi, 2018). The research will discuss
the strategies to avoid data breach in cloud computing (Kuyoro, Ibikunle, and Awodele, 2011).
The emerging cloud market has introduced various cloud service providers making it
difficult for the clients to decide the Cloud Service Provider who will provide security over the
cloud network. An emphasis has been laid on the requirement for service level agreements which
helps to address the security concerns of the clients (Rahulamathavan, Rajarajan, Rana, Awan, &
Burnap, 2015). However, analyzing the security service levels as well as the risks plays an
essential role while deciding the cloud provider. Data breaches are the most threatening security
concern which influences the adoption of cloud computing. The research is targeted to propose a
general analysis framework to analyze the risk associated with various cloud providers (Fan &
Chen, 2012).
A1. A problem or opportunity of interest
Organizations have been placing more data and infrastructure on the public cloud. Public
cloud has provided the freedom to the individuals as well as organizations to be more efficient,
9
agile and integrate new technologies quickly. With all the benefits provided by the public clouds,
there are certain concerns that should be resolved to avoid a data breach. According to one of the
research, the cases of a data breach in 2019 are over 3,800, which is 50% higher than the past 4
year’s record (Esposito, Castiglione, Martini, & Choo, 2016). There is a need to manage the
cloud computing data breach so that the organizational and customers information is not
sacrificed (Amanfi, 2018).
The research is of interest to me because my organization is using cloud servers and there
is a need to protect the data. The problem associated with any of the business can only be
resolved if thorough research can be conducted to resolve the issue. The research problem
associated with the organization is the strategies to avoid Cloud Computing data breaches. Cloud
Computing is one of the easiest ways to share the resources of the organization among all the
members without purchasing separate resources for all (Pfarr, Buckel, & Winkelmann, 2014).
For example, information prepared by the marketing manager regarding the contract proposal
placed on the cloud can we easily accept by the authorized person.
With so many advantages of cloud computing, there are many disadvantages associated
like tempering of information, information stolen by the hackers, or inefficient staff unable to
handle the data on the cloud in an efficient manner. A business cannot bear the loss of
information at any point of time because the information placed on the cloud is very important
which could have listed the mission, vision, goals, and strategies to accomplish those goals
(Geczy, Izumi, & Hasida, 2013). However, most of the organizations have already taken the
measures to safeguard the information on the cloud, yet the strategies should also be able to
identify the person associated with the data breach (Pfarr, Buckel, & Winkelmann, 2014).
A2. A direct connection to the field of study
10
Since, I planned to pursue doctorate program in information technology field and also
working at an organization dealing with cloud servers makes it directly associated with the field
of study. Cloud computing is a development approach for giving pay per use access to a social
occasion of shared resources for explicit frameworks, accumulating, servers, organization, and
applications, without physically getting them. Various businesses, for instance, keeping cash,
social protection and guidance are moving towards the cloud due to the efficiency of
organizations gave by the pay-per-use configuration in perspective on the advantages, for
instance, getting ready impact used, trades finished, capacity limit ate up, data traded, or extra
space had, etc (Aldossary & Allen, 2016).
The current trends that support the investigation of the topic are enhanced flexibility,
secured data, effective collaboration, and greater integration. Clouds can access all the relevant
data and files from any device and any location at any time with help of internet connection
(Esposito, Castiglione, Martini, & Choo, 2016). The working process has changed to remote and
flexible working which is important to provide them access to the data to the employees even if
they are not at the workplace (Alharbi, Atkins, & Stanier, 2016). It has helped people to work
from outside the office premises. This leads to additional cost saving of the organization.
It also discusses the types of hierarchies like private cloud, public cloud, hybrid cloud,
and community cloud. Private cloud is intended for use by a single organization (such as a
business unit) with many users. Organizations can manage cloud computers themselves or third
parties. It can be placed inside or outside the organization. Public cloud is intended for public
use. Its ownership and management power can be managed by some commercial company or
university organizations. Management and ownership may also be combined. Your facility must
be at the location of the cloud service provider (Hoffman & Woods, 2010). Hybrid cloud is a
11
combination of two or more different cloud infrastructures. It can be private, public or for
community use (Geczy, Izumi, & Hasida, 2013). They have different independent entities, but
share common technologies. This enables application and data portability when the load is
balanced between clouds, such as cloud bursts. Community cloud is dedicated to specific user
groups that have the same concerns and needs, such as security, politics, and tasks. Management
and ownership may belong to one or more organizations or may be responsible to third parties.
A3. A direct connection to the concentration
Cloud computing changed our general surroundings. Presently individuals are moving
their information to the cloud since information is getting greater and should be available from
numerous gadgets. In this manner, putting away the information on the cloud turns into a
standard. In any case, there are numerous issues that counter-information put away in the cloud
beginning from a virtual machine which is the intention to share resources in cloud and closure
on cloud stockpiling itself issues. The research has presented those issues that are keeping
individuals from receiving the cloud and give a review on arrangements that have been done to
minimize risks of these issues. In this paper, the researcher identifies issues identified with
information put away in cloud stockpiling and answers for those issues which contrast from
different papers which spotlight on cloud as general. (Aldossary & Allen, 2016) The problem is
directly connected to the concentration because it considers various factors associated with cloud
computing like security, flexibility, independence, reliability, and scalability (Borgman, Bahli,
Heier, & Schewski, 2013).
Scalability allows certain restrictions on the modifications that can be made to the
infrastructure. The architecture can be scaled vertically or horizontally according to
requirements. One of the main key features of using cloud computing is its scalability. Cloud
12
computing allows users to easily increase or decrease technical requirements based on their
needs. For example, cloud service providers allow you to manage existing IT resource
requirements to meet extended business needs. This will help you grow your business without
making major changes to your existing systems (Dutta, Peng, & Choudhary, 2013). Flexibility
allows accessing IT resources without human intervention. You can immediately provide
different functions to develop directly or according to the services you need. Cloud computing
gives users more flexibility when performing tasks. Cloud users can access data anytime,
anywhere. If you’re not at your desk and need access to your data, you can easily connect to a
virtual network.
Website redundancy allows you to continue your business in the event of a disaster.
Reliability means the quality of reliability. Measure and predict high reliability with minimal
downtime or downtime. This can be attractive for users and Imit Art Companys that rely on fast
response and reliable IT. System reliability is critical to the success of cloud computing.
Regardless of the deployment model, cloud deployment is huge and benefits from economies of
scale (Borgman, Bahli, Heier, & Schewski, 2013). They are usually located near power plants
and are cheap and cheap. Some authors point out that reducing capital expenditures is a key
economic benefit of cloud computing. Pay-per-use models, flexibility and scalability, and high
levels of virtualization in cloud computing services allow cloud users to avoid the huge costs
before installing IT. Investment costs can be allocated and controlled in the cloud (Luna, Suri,
Iorga, & Karmel, 2015).
A. Key Literature
B1. Context
13
Patel et all. (2013) stated that the distributed and open structure of cloud computing and
services becomes an attractive target for potential cyber-attacks by intruders. The traditional
Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS) are largely inefficient to be deployed in
cloud computing environments due to their openness and specific essence. This paper surveys,
explores and informs researchers about the latest developed IDPSs and alarm management
techniques by providing a comprehensive taxonomy and investigating possible solutions to
detect and prevent intrusions in cloud computing systems. Considering the desired characteristics
of IDPS and cloud computing systems, a list of germane requirements is identified and four
concepts of autonomic computing self-management, ontology, risk management, and fuzzy
theory are leveraged to satisfy these requirements (Patel, Taghavi, Bakhtiyar, & Junior, 2013).
Abdollahzadehgan et all. (2013), stated that the cloud computing has emerged as one of
the most discussed topics among enterprise IT professionals. This paper is giving list of cloud
computing advantages and disadvantages and some reasons will cause company adopt cloud
based services or avoiding. The small and medium size enterprise does not possess sufficient
financial and human recourse, in comparison to the large size factories, hence they are not
capable of upgrading their IT requirements efficiently, it will not allow them to have a sufficient
chance to compete with powerful competitors, in a business environment. Evaluating the impact
of organizational factors on cloud computing adoption in SMEs was determined as the main
purpose of this study and led to focus on the TOE framework as a famous theory on evaluating
IT adoption. For this purpose, organizational context divided into three main factors in base of
TOE framework include org…
