They must agree with you before you can send the idea to the key decision-maker. The speech will last six minutes, followed by a question-and-answer session. It will include electronic visual aids and an original chart.

In a 2-page memo, you will persuade the CEO or designated key decision maker to accept your recommendation. COMMUNICATION STRATEGY WORKSHEET FOR PERSUASIVE MESSAGES

Revised March 2020
Persuasive Presentation Topic: You have worked several years at a large, locally owned company. (Your
choice; pick a real company with headquarters in metro Atlanta). You feel that the company needs a
fresh approach to its annual employee-appreciation event. Convince your department to move to a
specific new venue. (Carefully research venues and sell your recommendation based on standards that
are most relevant to your company.) Once you have your department’s support, you will write a
recommendation to the head of human resources, persuading him/her to use the recommended venue.

PART TWO – Presentation
Make a professional business recommendation, based on the topic that you selected. A panel of
colleagues in your department will hear the presentation. They must decide whether the proposal is good
enough to send to the key decision-maker. The goal is to persuade your audience of the value of your
proposal.
Create a credible, effective 6-minute presentation that convinces your audience to allow you to make your
recommendation to the key decision-maker. Follow this pattern in the body:
1) problem (or need for a change)
2) the recommended change
3) benefits of changing
The outline of this model is on the Persuasive Strategy worksheet.
Support your position logically. Support the argument with valid evidence.
Your presentation must include relevant and effective visual aids, including a PowerPoint. Note: the first
slide must help you grab attention! Use it to reinforce the content in the attention-grabbing introduction.
Do not begin with a slide that states the topic.
You must include a professional, relevant, easy-to-read chart that you create and project on the big
screen. It must help to build your case. Provide the source of the data on the chart.
Do not use electronic slides as note cards. Use the slides to enhance your message. Review your
informative speech feedback on your visual aids– do not make the same slide design mistakes.
Each slide should be simple, visual, and memorable. Readers should be able to grasp the message
easily and quickly. You may not use clip art. Data and photo sources must be given in small text on the
slide.

PART THREE: Memo
Your presentation audience agrees that your idea has validity. You have the panel’s approval to
send the recommendation to the key decision-maker. Write a two-page persuasive business
memo. You may include an original table or chart that supports your case.
Note: this message is NOT the same as the persuasive speech. It has a new audience, new
channel, and new purpose. You need a new strategy worksheet and outline. Thoroughly analyze
the audience and your message, and then complete the strategy worksheet and outline. Use business
format for the memo.
