Cuyamaca College Superficial Assessment of Gang Members Essay Select one of the following questions and write a five to six paragraph essay responding to it. Your response and analysis will require an argument and claims using quotes and evidence from the book to support them. Are gang members a product of their environment? Are they
victims of circumstances beyond their control and the society
around them? Or, are they simply malicious criminals bent on
breaking the law? How does the book, and Luis’ experiences in
particular, support your viewpoint?
2. In the novel, Luis manages to escape the gang life. Is this
possible for all gang members? How was Luis able to escape his
fate? Consider the ways in which Luis was not a prototypical
gang member and differed significantly from many of his
friends. What made Luis unique and how did these qualities help
him overcome the “crazy life”? Can all individuals tap deep into
themselves to change their lives and if so, how? Or, are some
people condemned to a fate that more often than not involves
incarceration and death?
3. Is the book an indictment of America and its ideals, including
its national ethos, the American Dream? How does the plight of
many of the characters in the book (particularly that of Luis and
his family) serve to undermine these?
4. What do you think can be done to prevent children from
joining gangs? Is there any hope for kids that find themselves in
Luis’ former situation? What changes must we as a society bring
about? What must our government and institutions do? Explain
your viewpoint.
