Cultural Heritage Assessment
Paper instructions
Instructions Cultural Heritage Assignment
Individual Client Specific Assessment
Each student will complete a thorough cultural assessment on a client of his/her choice. The client should be from a different culture than the student. The assessment should determine the cultural beliefs/values of the person.
Based on the idea that everyone is influenced by cultural variations, and the number of variations is increasing everywhere with the large number of immigrants moving from one country to another, nurses must understand cultural variation as a basis for even minimally safe and effective care (Weber & Kelley, 2018)
To complete a culturally competent assessment, it is essential to interact with the client showing respect for the person, the family, and beliefs. Challenge yourself to learn about many of the cultural groups in your geographical area and interact with them enough to gain some understanding and appreciation for their worldviews.
Use your knowledge when meeting and assessing your clients, but be alert for behaviors, descriptions, or physical variations that need to be clarified as normal for their culture or abnormal and needing further assessment. All aspects of the current health care system must undergo fundamental change to respond effectively to the diverse people who comprise American society today.
Heritage Assessment
Background: The heritage assessment is based on the concept of acculturation and how consistent the client’s lifestyle is with the cultural group from which it originates, or the traditional habits of the client’s family’s culture Weber & Kelley (pg. 197).
This set of questions is used to determine a person’s ethnic, cultural and religious background. The heritage assessment is helpful to determine how deeply a person identifies with his or her traditional heritage. This assessment is very useful in setting the stage for understanding a person’s traditional health and illness beliefs and practices ad in helping determine the family and community resources that will be appropriate for support when necessary.
Note: The greater the number of positive responses, the greater the degree to which the person may identify with his or her traditional heritage. The one exception to positive answers is the question about whether a person’s name was changed. The respondent is credited one point for answering “no.”
Format
Use the attached guides beginning on page 3 to gather the appropriate information, refer to Chapter 11, in your textbook.
The completed project must include:
- Self-Assessment – (form belowstarts on page 3)
- Heritage Assessment (form below starts on page 3)
- Discussion of the client’s specific cultural values, beliefs and issues that you identified with Two (2) Actual/Potential Nursing Diagnosis in NANDA format. Use scholarly writing, analysis and reflection as appropriate in your answers (begins at the end of the questions).
- References (at least 2) for the discussion section, cited and listed in areference List.
- APA format is required, 12 Times New Roman font, with a cover page.
For the Self-Assessment and Heritage Assessment portions of the assignment, you can delete the Instruction portion of this assignment and edit the document that follows by typing in the client’s answers. Use analysis and reflection as appropriate in your answers.
THIS DISCUSSION PORTION NEEDS TO BE TYPED IN ESSAY/PARAGRAPH FORMAT (APA and you need 2 references, which you can use your textbook as one).
Finally, remember the greater the number of positive responses, the greater the degree to which the person may identify with his or her traditional heritage. Analyze and reflect on the degree to which you think your client identifies with their traditional heritage. You will also need to include at least 2 actual/potential nursing diagnoses in NANDA format and explain how you came to these diagnoses. Each student should submit their assignment via Moodle and be prepared to discuss in class
