Critical Analysis Essay

For your second major writing assignment, you will analyze a text, looking at the rhetorical choices that build up the text. You will make an argument about how these choices create a unified message for readers. That means this essay requires a thesis statement and evidence to support your thesis.
When it comes to a text consider using an essay, advertisement, film, novel, poem, billboard, music video, song, political cartoon, video game, website, newspaper article, etc. You have a wide range of options, but your text must contain words, either spoken or written. It cannot just be visual. You also need to make sure it’s a text you can write about for 5 to 6 pages. It may help if you pick a text that reflects a topic you are invested in personally. For example: classmate Susie Q’s sister just had a baby. Susie Q is learning all about babies and what new mothers face because she is close with her sister. The text she picks to analyze is a controversial op-ed piece in the newspaper about the dangers of vaccinating your baby.
Your rough draft should be double-spaced, typed in 12 point Times New Roman font, in black ink, with 1 inch margins, so plan accordingly. I don’t want to see any big headings taking up a good portion of the page. Your name and the date in 12 point font will suffice.
