Computer Architecture Questions Discussion All resources should be cited using CU Harvard style. The final assignment must have a Title page, Table of Contents, References/ bibliography using CU Harvard Style and page numbers. Guidelines: Assignment must be computer typed. Font – Times New Roman Font – Style – Regular Font – Size – 12 Heading should be with Font Size 14, Bold, Capital and Underline. Explain with suitable diagrams wherever required. Diagrams must be drawn using suitable software or by pencil. Module Learning Outcomes
The following Los are achieved by the student by completing the assignment successfully
► Use and apply correctly a recognized set of terms for machine description. (LO 1)
> Analyze trade-offs and apply design measures in maximizing system performance. (LO 2)
> Analyze an awareness of specialized architectures which offer high performance for
particular applications areas. (LO 3)
Assignment Objective
The aim of this assessment is to assess student’s knowledge on different aspects of computer
architecture, how some aspects improve performance as compared to others. Also to assess awareness
on special architectures using pipeline and how performance is improved for particular application.
Assignment Tasks
1. Given is a computer with a memory whose specification is as follows:
Memory
4096 K words
The computer supports an inst
64 bits per word
> Operation code field
> Mode field
> Register field
>Memory Address field
> Memory Address field
The computer supports a total of 20 addressing modes, and it has 150 computer registers.
a. Illustrate with a suitable diagram the format of instruction by specifying number of bits
for each filed if each instruction can be stored in one memory word.
(10 + 10 = 20 marks)
b. Provide your reflection on registers such as Address register, Data register, Program
counter, Instruction register in terms of size and function.
(5 marks)
C. Discuss which is most suitable classification for the above computer RISC or CISC by
giving valid reasons.
(5 marks)
(30 marks)
2. Computers with complex instructions require other phases in addtion to fetch and execute to process
instruction completely. In the most general case, computers need to process each instruction with
following sequence of steps. Also given is the time taken by each step to complete.
► Fetch the instruction from memory (3 sec)
> Decode the instruciton (4 sec)
► Calculate the effective address (4 sec)
> Read the data/operand from memory (4 sec)
→ Execute the instruction (3 sec)
Store the result in the proper place (4 sec)
Consider a program consisting of 5 complex instructions is to be processed using above computer.
Design an efficient instruction pipeline and determine time taken by the above computer to execute
the given program. Discuss how use instruction pipeline technique gives better performance as
compared to sequential processing. Briefly give your reflection on throughput provided by instruction
pipeline.
(25 + 10 + 5 = 40 Marks)
3. You are given following arithmetic instructions:
X = (A * B ** C)/(D % (E+F* G))
X = (A % (B+C)/D) * (E / F ** G)
Choose any one of the given arithmetic equation and perform the following:
a. Give instructions to evaluate the arithmetic equation using 3 address instructions. (10 marks)
b. Give instructions to evaluate the arithmtic equation using 0 address instructions. (10 marks)
C. Critically analysed the performance obtained when using 3 address instruction and address
instructions.
(5 marks)
d. Evaluate the arithmtic equation using pipeline technique. Analyse pipeline in terms of segments
and latches.
(10 + 5 = 15 marks)
Note: ** represents Exponentiation operator (EXP)
% reperesents modulus operator (MOD)
/ represents division operator (DIV)
represents multiplication operator (MUL)
+ represents addition operaror (ADD)
