COMM 3010 Cuyamaca College Lying & Nonverbal Communication Aspects Research Paper Purpose: For this paper, you will design a study to investigate an aspect of nonverbal communication using an appropriate methodology from the appendix of your text. You may choose between: anecdotal, ethnographic, survey, or textual-analysis methods. You will propose a research question(s) and develop a hypothesis that could be tested with data collection at a future date (possibly in COM 4065?). We will be creating the conceptual phase of this original study only, with details below.

Procedure: The conceptual phase is the first steps/pages of a research project which includes steps 1- 4 below: what you want to study, why it’s worth studying, what has already been done, what you expect to find out, and the method you are proposing to use.

1) Statement of problem—This is the introduction to the paper and should include your general research question and why it represents a subject worth investigating. Justify the need to do the research. It is important to support your rationale with sources.(about a page)
2) Review of literature—This section examines previous research on your topic: the kind of studies that have been done, how they were done (methods), and what they found (results). Findings should be summarized and organized into major themes/categories. Please do not list/discuss ten different studies one after the other – group them together by what they have to teach you about your topic or previous research. Use headings to organize these themes. Look at examples of literature reviews before getting started. The article that we read at the beginning of class, Tattoo and the Self, has a good example of a literature review. Your review of literature should be the bulk of this paper (at least five pages).
3) Statement of questions/hypotheses—In this section, you identify and justify the questions and/or hypotheses you intend to investigate in your study. Clarify your research question(s) using the following format at the end of this section. For example: RQ1: What is the relationship between where students sit in college classrooms and their frequency of verbal participation in a class? (a page or less)
4) Method—This is a description of the methods you intend to use to answer your questions or to test your hypotheses. Use one of the methods from the Appendix of our text book (except Experimental). All important details are spelled out here regarding the participants you plan to study, how many, how you will recruit participants, the procedures you plan to follow, the materials you’ll use, and so forth. If someone wanted to try and replicate your study they would need these details. (1-2 pages)
5) References—A complete list of your sources using the APA style for citations. Conduct academic research using at least 10 different credible sources related to your topic. At

least 5 of these sources should come from peer-reviewed academic journals. You may cite our text, but that would be in addition to your 10 sources.

Paper Details: The written report should be a minimum of eight (8) pages, double spaced, 12 pt. font. The written report must also include a title page (give your study a creative title) and works cited list in addition to this page count.
