My teacher talked about policy change and how you have to have the audience relate and agree with you. I am stuck on a topic and have a video presentation I have to do for another class. Persuasive Speech Assignment
COMM 1110 Principles of Public Speaking
Directions: You are to prepare and deliver two persuasive speeches, each one on a question of
policy. One must be a speech to gain passive agreement; the other must be a speech to gain
immediate action (see the class text, pp. 309-311). You can prepare and deliver either a speech to
gain passive agreement or a speech to gain immediate action for persuasive speech #1, but you
must prepare a speech on the other for persuasive speech #2.
Persuasive speech #1 should be 8-10 minutes in length and persuasive speech #2 should be 10-12
minutes in length, and both must follow the Monroe’s Motivated Sequence (see Motivated
Sequence Handout” posted in “Handouts” on FOLIO, and Lucas pp. 321-324). Speeches will be
given according to the speaking schedule (posted on FOLIO). You are required to support your
ideas with a minimum of 5 outside sources. Persuasive Speech #1 is worth up to 120 points;
Persuasive Speech #2 is worth up to 180 points. The speeches will be evaluated on the following
criteria: organization, language, material, delivery, analysis, and voice.
In addition, you are required to turn into the instructor a preparation outline using the Motivated
Sequence Outline Template (posted on FOLIO with in “Assignments”). Preparation outlines are
due as indicated on the speaking schedule. The preparation outline for persuasive speech #1 is
worth up to 10 points and for persuasive speech #2 up to 15 points. Failure to meet the deadline
for the preparation outline will result in a score of zero on the preparation outline and a
deduction of 12 points from the persuasive speech #1 score and 18 points from the persuasive
speech #2 score. Failure to turn in an outline prior to the speech will result in a deduction of an
additional 25 points. All preparation outlines should be prepared as follows:
1. Your name
2. Title of your speech
3. Specific purpose of your speech (written to meet the criteria discussed in class and in
the class text)
4. Central idea
5. Follow Monroe’s motivated sequence as per the class “Handout” and described by the
class text
6. Use only complete sentences
7. Cite all outside sources
8. References/Works Cited
9. Include a link to the outside research cited in outline
10. Use template for motivated sequence (in Folio under “Assignments”)
