Scenario: The new 2,000-bed Coronavirus Hospital Facility
The UK Government, via one of the large NHS trusts, is rushing to build a dedicated multi-million pound
hospital to deal with the expected surge of patients with coronavirus who could overwhelm the system.
The Hospital facility is to be built in East London’s Docklands with the aim of handing over the completed
Hospital in four weeks from the date of site possession.
To speed up the construction process, the hospital will be built with prefabricated materials and Steel
Frame construction has been specified. The Government is adopting a selective tendering approach by
inviting a few experienced contractors to submit tenders. The appointed contractor will speedily seek to
recruit an experienced senior Project Manager to oversee the delivery of the Hospital project. Value
creation is at the heart of all government projects and this hospital facility is no exception. The stated aim
of the government is to deliver a sustainable building.
Produce a maximum 2000 word report to be presented to the Government’s procurement advisors by
addressing the following five (5) issues. The report should show not just that you know about the issues
that are involved in such a project – but that you are able to reflect on what they mean in the long run. We
encourage you to think about the presentation, use tables and figures where necessary, and ensure it is
edited and uses a referencing system

Include a review of the main advantages and disadvantages of using steel in construction of
buildings, e.g. for beams and columns (BCPM0062)

Assessment Criteria
The assignment is being assessed on a pass / fail basis.
To pass your writing should show evidence that:
1. That you have absorbed and understood the content of modules taught this year. This will be
apparent from the overall quality of your report.
2. Critical reflection and analysis – that you have thought about the material presented to you in
classes and lectures and that you can express your questions about it and assess its relative
importance to the task here.
3. That you can structure a written assignment to communicate a hierarchy of information and
present it well.
If you use tables and figures make sure the text explains their relevance and that they are well
presented.
