D. ASSIGNMENT TASKS (1500 words)
Q1:
a) Supported by evidence in the literature, critically reflect on (i.e. in your own words) the
circumstances under which pile foundations are necessitated (10 marks) – 200 words
b) After a thorough investigation of site conditions, it has been decided to provide design of a
3 x 4 pile group for a high-rise building in Muscat. Two sites were selected.
SITE A: a layered fine-grained soil consisting of loose clay underlain by stiff clay (10 marks)
SITE B: a layered coarse-grained soil consisting of loose sand underlain by gravely layer
(10 marks)
Referring to your individual soil data, determine the ultimate structural load that can be
allowed on the pile group and interpret your results.
Q2:
a) It is required to check the stability of a layered soil slope shown below using any two
methods of slices. In order to ensure accuracy of the method, a minimum of five (5) slices
should be considered for analysis. Note however that the more number of slices the more
the accuracy improves. Individual soil data is provided in a separate file in Moodle.

b) Appraise the critical state soil mechanics concept. You may evaluate this concept in
relation to the classical soil mechanics currently followed in geotechnics. (5 marks) – 200
words
E. REPORT FORMAT
Follow a typical research paper format. For paper formats (font size 12, margins – right, top
and bottom 1 inch; left 1.5 inch). The structure of the current report is expected to contain at
least the following.
1) COVER PAGE
 College name & logo
 Department name
 Your name and I.D. number
 Semester: Spring 2020
2) TABLE OF CONTENTS
Provide a table of contents with corresponding page numbers.
3) INTRODUCTION
In the introduction part of your report, you are attempting to inform the reader about the
rationale behind your work. In other words, you are justifying why your work is an essential
component of the module you are taking – Geotechnology 2 (CIVL 0016). The introduction is
written with the view of introducing the topic of your CW and setting it into a broad context,
gradually narrowing down to your learning outcomes. You may also state what type of approach
you will be using in your CW for the entire discussion of your topic. Suffice to write a maximum
of one page introduction (half page is OK).
4) APPROACH
This section also covers the data collection and analysis methods, such as computer models
(software), mathematical models, questionnaires, interviews, visual observations, document
review, etc. Relevant soil parameters and calculations should be shown clearly.
5) DISCUSSION

3/14
Geotechnology 2 (CIVL 0016)-Spring-2020-Assignment 2-Session A&B-QP
The purpose of a results section is to present and illustrate your findings. Make this section a
completely objective report of the results. The purpose of the discussion section is to provide an
interpretation of your results and support for all of your conclusions, using evidence from your
calculations and results, literature review and generally accepted knowledge, if appropriate. All
evidences taken from the literature (i.e. research) needs to be supported by the CU-Harvard
citation and referencing style. The significance of findings should be clearly described.
6) CONCLUSION
In academic writing, a well-crafted conclusion can provide the final word on the value of your
analysis, research, or paper. Complete your conclusions with conviction! Consider the conclusion
from the reader’s perspective. At the end of a paper, a reader wants to know how to benefit from
the work you accomplished in your paper. Include the following in your conclusion.
 How do the ideas in your report connect to what we have discussed in class, or to what
scholars have written in their treatment of your topic?
 What new ideas have you added to the conversation? What ideas do you critique?
 What are the limitations of your data, methods, or results?
 What are the consequences of the strongest idea that comes out of your report?

the student is required to re-register the module. This is applicable to first and second offenders
of plagiarism.
Plagiarism
A. First offence of plagiarism
a. If a student is caught first time in an act of plagiarism during his/her course of study in any
assignment other than project work, the student will be allowed to re-submit the
assignment once, within a maximum period of one week. However, a penalty of deduction
of 25% of the marks obtained for the resubmitted work will be imposed.
b. Period of re-submission: The student will have to re-submit the work one week from the
date he or she is advised to re-submit.
c. If the re-submitted work is also found to be plagiarized, then that assessment will be
awarded a zero mark. Re-submission of the work beyond the maximum period of one
week will not be accepted and the assessment will be awarded a zero mark.
d. If plagiarism is detected in Project work (Project 1, Project Planning and Project Design and
