Citrus College Intelligent Civilization Questions 1. Create a multiple choice question based What is your gut feeling about where humans should go next?. The question (worth
30 points) must have
– four or five items to choose from (10)
– the correct answer circled (10)
– a reasonable degree of difficulty (i.e.: not too easy or too hard) (10) ( No numerical questions please.)
2. Briefly describe the journey of Pioneer 10. How does it illustrate the challenge of interstellar travel? (20)
3. How does the speed of light affect the possibility of interstellar travel? (10)
4. About how much energy would it take to send enough people on a trip to start a colony around another
star? How does this compare to the world’s total energy use? (10)
5. What is the rocket equation used for? Based on the rocket equation and the mass ratio, briefly explain
why chemical rockets are inadequate for sending people or large robotic probes to the stars. (10) Where Next? Discussion
What is your gut feeling about where humans should go next? Give two or more reasons that
justify your choice.
My gut feeling is that humans should go to Mars next. This time it should not only be on an
exploration mission, but they should determine the possibility of survival or human beings. This
is because of the high rate of depletion of the earth’s sources. Humans should, therefore, be
looking for an alternative place of survival, which should be Mars as it is the most habitable
planet in the solar system. Getting to Mars could be the next giant leap for humankind. It could
see developments in areas such as medicine, recycling, and food production. This is because
the same way that people survive on earth would not be the same way that they would on Mars.
Therefore, there would be a need for the development of innovative techniques, which are
suitable for the entire solar system. Various reasons legitimize its habitability. The soil on Mars
contains water that can be extracted to make it friendlier to humans. It is also neither too hot or
too cold. Enough sunlight found on Mars could enable humans to use solar panels. The issue of
gravity is also essential, and that on Mars is 38 percent of the earth’s, which makes it possible
for humans to adapt there (Wall, 2019). Perhaps, the trip to Mars could be the push that
humans need to attempt and find inventions that would make life habitable in all other parts of
the solar system.

exploration.
Paul Scott Anderson (2018) published an article questioning whether there could have been life
on the moon in the distant past. The report acknowledges the fact that the moon is airless and
dry, and therefore, the belief that there was life may be a fallacy. However, it brings into
perspective research from scientists from the Washington state university who indicate that
there may have been living in the moon about a billion years ago. There is evidence that the
moon had water ice and permanently shadowed craters. The implication of this is that there may
have been the possibility of microscopic forms of life not long after the moon formed a debris
disk, which is estimated to have been about 4 billion years ago.
The findings relayed in this article are quite intriguing. Initially, I believed that there has never
been life in the moon. The article does not change my perspective, but it challenges it. I have
learned another aspect about the existence of life either from earth or having formed from the
moon during those years of the formation of the debris disk. There was also the discovery that
there was ever volcanic activity in the moon, about 3.5 billion years ago, which is new for me.
This is what could have led to the presence of water vapor and conditions supporting life in the
moon.
I also admit that the article has challenged my thinking about whether astronauts should go
back to the moon and get samples to determine whether there was any existence of human life.
That would be the best way for people like me who have doubts about settling it. These samples
would also be useful in the determination of whether there is the possibility of another eruption.
Better still, could humans cause a human made volcano to support life and eventually have
some of us crowded here on earth move to the moon. The article is full of possibilities for space
exploration issues.
