and products formed:
2. How long did it take to finish the reaction?
3. List any important IR peaks (If no noteworthy peaks, answer “none”).
4. List any IR peaks NOT PRESENT that indicate the product was formed? (Hint: think
about the functional groups of the starting material and the product) (If not, answer
“none”)
5. List the 1H NMR peaks. List the peak number, chemical shift, multiplicity (splitting
pattern), and the integration.
6. List the 13C NMR peaks. List the peak number and the chemical shift. CHEM 3112
Beyond Labz Experiment 9: Friedel-Crafts
The Friedel-Crafts reaction is an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction that takes two
forms: alkylation and acylation. The reaction was originally reported by French chemist Charles
Friedel and American chemist James Crafts in 1877. It is one of the most important reactions in
organic synthesis. Friedel-Crafts reactions are catalyzed by Lewis acids such as AlCl3 or FeBr3.
Friedel-Crafts alkylation is between an alkyl halide and an aromatic ring. Friedel-Crafts
acylation is between an acid chloride and an aromatic ring.
Friedel-Crafts Alkylation:
Friedel-Crafts Acylation:
In this experiment, you will be synthesizing 4-acetyltoluene via a Friedel-Crafts acylation.
Lewis acid reagents are highly water sensitive, so anhydrous conditions are necessary.
Additionally, exceptionally polar solvents can poison the Lewis acid as well. This experiment
will require a separation of multiple products via distillation.

Open Beyond Labz Client.
Choose the “Worksheets” tab.
Choose “Organic Chemistry”.
Choose “Aromatic Substitution”.
Choose “Friedel-Crafts – 1”; this should bring up a PDF file with the experimental
procedure.
6. Back in the Beyond Labz Client, choose the “Labs” tab, and open “Organic Chemistry”
7. Under “Organic Worksheets” choose “Aromatic Substitution” then “VCL 8-4: Friedel
Crafts – 1”. This should bring you to the lab bench.
8. You are now ready to attempt the experiment.
