Central Michigan University The Code of Hammurabi & Babylon Society Essay The end-result should be a two-page essay, double-spaced, that could well follow the formating used in English classes at the college of five separate paragraphs: first paragraph should constitute an introduction and overview of the paper, paragraphs two to four are designed so that each one addresses a single category of analysis (male-female relations, social class relations, issues of governance) and a fifth paragraph that draws the general conclusion that flow directly out of your analysis. Please view attachtment as it goes over the instructions. As indicated in the syllabus for this course, we will need to consider the
fundamental role of primary sources in the work of the historian. And in this regard,
there are two general ways that historians tend to use them. First, obviously,
primary sources provide the basic roadmap to understanding the sequence of
events that one is trying to analyze. But there is a second modality that is also
important. Primary sources can provide a mirror on the lifeways of different people.
And they, i.e. the primary sources, can do it in two ways. The first is by simply
describing aspects of everyday life. Think, for example, of the diary of an ordinary
person in which she or he records the common occurrences of each day. Consider
also in this regard those painting that portray the actions of people in their common
rounds: laborers in the fields, children at play, or shoppers in the market. There is,
however, a second way that is somewhat less direct: extracting information from a
source that was written for a different purpose. This is certainly the case with the
Code of Hammurabi. This listing of laws was not compiled with the intent of
providing a view of Mesopotamian society for future students of history.
Nevertheless, it is eminently useful in this regard. The assignment for you is to write
a two-page essay that reviews the “Code” for the following issues: social class
differences, male-female relations, and, finally, aspects of governance. While you
obviously cannot be exhaustive and refer to all the laws in the book, you should use
at least two laws for each of the three items. Remember, you are trying to use the
Code to describe Babylonian society in 1750 BCE. Furthermore, this is not the place
to voice your opinion, but merely to state what you have found there. When you
write this up, please indicate which of the laws that you are referring to by putting
the number of the law in parentheses (for example, law #38). You should submit
your response as a Word Document here no later than 10 pm Saturday, June 6th.
