(15 points) Consider a WB-50 design vehicle. On a curve with a radius of
1000 ft, a width of traveled way on the tangent of 22 ft, and a posted speed
limit of 55 mph, does the pavement need to be widened? If it does need to
be widened, where would you advise adding the additional pavement? Be
sure to show your work. Use the attached figures to determine the input
values and include them with your mark-ups with your homework
submission.
Problem 2
(5 points) A curve is being designed for 70 mph. What is the minimum
curve radius when the maximum rate of superelevation is 6% and the
maximum side friction factor is 10%. Be sure to show your calculations.
Problem 3
(10 points) A 3% uphill grade is immediately followed by a 2% downhill
grade along a proposed highway alignment. For a design speed of 55 mph,
find the minimum length of a vertical curve that satisfies the passing sight
distance requirement. Use equations and show all calculations. Based on
the result, would you restrict the passing maneuver and redesign the curve
appropriately?
