AST 101 Lab#12: Carl Sagan’s “Lost” Lecture
Spring 2020
Carl Sagan was a very famous astronomer and public educator in his
day, inspiring millions to gaze up at the Universe and wonder. He was an
accomplished planetary scientist, on mission teams for many of the
interplanetary space missions of the 20th century, and was a professor at
Cornell University. His popular series, Cosmos, was recently rebooted with
Neil deGrasse Tyson, and he was also the author of a number of famous
books, including Contact, which became a movie.
Today’s lab is simple: I’ll be streaming a video of a lecture he gave at
Cornell to the public called The Age of Exploration; for those of you unable
to catch the lecture, you can find it here. We might have a little time for
discussion after the lecture, but in either case, all I want you to do is to
write a 2-page response paper about the lecture. What did you learn?
What did you think of his lecture? Did he challenge any of your ways of
thinking? Did you agree with him or disagree (or both)?
This 2-page paper will be due on the last day of classes at CSI this
semester, which is Thursday, May 14th.
Please Note: This is the last lab of the semester. There will be no lab
class on Wednesday, May 13th. Normally it would have been the final
exam, but I have cancelled the exam.
Also, don’t forget to fill out the course evaluation for the class! If you
all fill it out, there will be extra credit given to all of you. If you’re having
difficulty filling it out, please talk to the CSI technology help desk. It’s
important for me to hear all of your feedback, positive, negative, and
otherwise, so I’d really appreciate your filling it out.
It’s been a pleasure teaching you all this semester. I’m sorry it’s been such
a strange one, but I wish you all the best of health and success in your
future!
