The advocacy group Consumers Concerned About Cereal Cheaters (CCACC) suspects that cereal
companies, including Oxford Cereals, are cheating consumers by packaging cereals at less than labeled
weights. Recently, the group investigated the package weights of two popular Oxford brand cereals.
Read document 1 in the Project 1 Info document. Review this document and then answer the following
questions. Use the data in the Data 1 Worksheet.
1. Are the data collection procedures that the CCACC used to form its conclusions flawed? What
procedures could the group follow to make its analysis more rigorous?
2. Calculate the Descriptive Statistics for each of the two samples of five cereal boxes collected by
organization members. Show your output.
3. Determine if each of the two cereal brands, Oxford O’s and Alpine Frosted Flakes with Vitamins
and Minerals, come from a population with a mean box weight of 368 grams. Show your output.
a. Oxford O’s Sample
i. What are your hypotheses?
ii. What is your alpha-level?
iii. What is your decision for the Oxford O’s boxes? Show the values you are
comparing to make your decision.
b. Alpine Frosted Flakes with Vitamins and Minerals sample
i. What are your hypotheses?
ii. What is your alpha-level?
iii. What is your decision for the Alpine Frosted Flakes with Vitamins and Minerals
boxes? Show the values you are comparing to make your decision.
4. A representative from Oxford Cereals has asked that the CCACC take down its page discussing
shortages in Oxford Cereal boxes. Is this request reasonable? Why or why not?
Even after the recent public experiment about cereal box weights, Consumers Concerned About Cereal
Cheaters (CCACC) remained convinced that Oxford Cereals had misled the public. The group created and
circulated Document 2 in the Project 1 Info document. In this document, CCACC claims that cereal boxes
produced at Plant Number 2 in Springville weigh less than the boxes produced in Plant Number 1.
Review this document and then answer the following questions. Use the data in the Data 2 Worksheet.
5. Determine if the CCACC results prove that there is a statistically significant difference in the
mean weights of cereal boxes produced at Plant Numbers 1 and 2. Show your output.
i. What are your hypotheses?
ii. What is your alpha-level?
iii. What is your decision? Show the values you are comparing to make your
decision.
6. Does the CCACC have a case against Oxford cereals? Why or why not?
All answers to the above questions should be typed using a word processing program. All Excel output
with relevant data analyses should be attached.
There will be NO EXTENSIONS and NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS. Plan accordingly.
I will not be looking over assignments ahead of time. I will not be telling you which statistical test to run.

CCACC
Concerned Consumers About Cereal Cheaters
We at the CCACC of Springville are committed to exposing frauds in the packaged cereal industry.
Recently, we were disappointed to discover that Oxford Cereals, our local packaged foods producer, was
producing boxes of cereal that had less cereal than claimed on their boxes.
Our members discovered shortages in their two favorite cereals: Oxford O’s and Oxford’s Alpine Frosted
Flakes with Vitamins & Minerals. One member thought her box of Oxford’s Pennsylvania Dutch-Style
Chocolate Brownie Morning Squares was short, but her son opened the box and starting eating that
cereal before we could weigh the box. We did not collect any data on the other Oxford cereals because
none of our members regularly buy those varieties.
For our investigation, members from our group went to their favorite stores and bought 368-gram size
boxes of O’s and Alpine Frosted Flakes (about 13 ounces). Boxes were then taken home and weighed.
See the data below.

We discovered that 80 percent of the boxes weighed less than 368 grams! Oxford Cereals should be
embarrassed!
We call on Oxford Cereals president Whitney Lagata to make a public apology and for Oxford Cereals to
issue refunds to all consumers!
If you know of other cases of cereal company cheaters please let us know by e-mail or visit us any
Saturday by the big weather balloon display in the Village Mall.

MORE ON CEREAL CHEATERS
Recently, Oxford Cereals reacted to our charges of producing boxes of cereals with less weight than
claimed on the boxes. The company conducted a sample of two cereal production lines in Cereal Plant
#1 and attempted to show that their cereal boxes had the claimed weights.
What Oxford Cereals didn’t tell you is that they did not offer the reporter access to Cereal Plant #2! By
examining production codes on boxes of cereal that our members have purchased and identify the
cereal plant of origin, we believe that we have uncovered a pattern of lighter-than-claimed cereal boxes
being produced in their Plant #2.
We recently purchased a new sample of cereal boxes – ten produced at Plant #1 and ten produced at
Plant #2. We discovered that the average weight of Plant #1 boxes was 372.44 grams, but that the
average weight of Plant #2 was 365.64 grams, less than the 368 grams claimed!
Below is our data.
