I’ve had the same friendships since middle school, and I am now in my thirties. I had one friendship that ended for the simple fact that this person was very private. She was very secretive about her life, which is not entirely a bad thing. I had known this person for 10 years before we stopped talking. I am the type of person who is very open about my life if I considered you a good friend and I did not realize how important that was to me to have in exchange. She was always interested in my life and wanted to give me advice on things, but I could not do the same for her because she kept those parts of her life were a secret. I started to pull away from the relationship because neither one of us benefited from it. There were not emotional outcomes. I still speak to this person on social media, but we are not as close as we once were. In the Ted Talk video The mothers found forgiveness and friendship, these two women talk about what they shared that brought them together. “And I feel that we have a special connection, which I value very much” (Rodriguez/ Wafi 2010). Chapter 7 Section 7.1 they discuss social exchange theory for example when “a relationship may deteriorate if another relationship with same functions has more/better rewards”. I felt this captured the issues in my friendship and why it didn’t continue.

I’ve been friends with the same group of 4 girls for what feels like a lifetime now. We met in high school and have been as thick as thieves since. These friendships would be considered reciprocal because of their solidity despite changes in geography, fluctuations in life such as marriage, children, and work (Jones, 2013, pg. 307). We have been friends consistently for over 10 years now, though we all live in different parts of the country we make it a thing to talk often and get together at least once a year.

Freshman year was the beginning of us all going separate ways, and I remember starting what seemed to be a friendship with someone who went to the same campus as me and lived across the hall. As time went on, I found that I was way more invested in the relationship than she was. For example, I recall numerous times where I was called to be there for her emotionally, help her understand an assignment, drive her to her family in Miami, and whatever else. It occurred to me that our relationship was one sided the day I asked her to be here for me and she was not. People can have connections beyond their similarities such as culture and background (El- Wafe, A. & Rodriguez, P., 2010). However for the friendship to work, their needs to be a balance of cost and rewards.
