Brookdale Community College Confidence Intervals for Quantitative Data Lab Report I have attached Lab 6 which is the assignment and Lab 3 as well for additional information needed. Please let me know if you have any other questions. MATH 131
Lab 6
8/16
The goal of this lab is to form confidence intervals for quantitative data (V3) and to determine
an appropriate sample size for a selected error tolerance.
(6 points)
Part 1: Confidence Intervals for Quantitative Data, V3
Name of V3: ________________________________________
A. Using the sample mean and standard deviation from Lab 3, form a 95% confidence
interval for the mean of your population.
B. Use the method discussed in class to write the interval in statement form. It is not
sufficient to write an algebraic inequality. You must write a statement of the form: “I am
95% confident that the actual mean age of U.S. Senators is between 54.2 and 60.1.”
C. Repeat A and B for a 99% confidence interval.
D. State clearly the difference between these two confidence intervals. (Explain which is
wider and why.)

Part 2: Sample Size Determination
A. Based upon your experience with your data, select a “desirable” value for E, the
margin of error. Choose E to be smaller than the E that you computed in
Part 1 A, above.
B. Calculate the minimum sample size required to produce results accurate to a 95%
degree of confidence and margin of error, E. Show your calculations; use your
sample standard deviation as an approximation for the population standard deviation.
C. Write your answer in statement form like “With a sample size of at least 89, I will be
95% confident that my sample mean will be within 1 year of the true mean age of the U.S.
Senators.”

The goal of this lab is to find descriptive statistics for your quantitative data.

F. Use Chebychev’s Theorem to write a statement about the interval from 2 standard deviations
below the mean to 2 standard deviations above the mean. List the specific interval you used for
your data. Interpret the result in the context of your data.
