This essay should be a persuasive essay of 8-10 pages that takes a stand on an issue related to the theme of the course (social media and society). Your essay will analyze the issue and propose a detailed solution to the problem.

You will need to spend some time in your essay outlining the problem. The amount of space will be determined by your choice of problem. How much do your readers know about the problem? How many groups or interests are involved? How long has the problem existed? How urgent is the problem?

As you develop your body paragraphs, you need to think not only about the problem, but also the solution or set of solutions. What is the first step? What is the most expedient solution? What is the solution that is most acceptable to all or most in the audience?

You will need to cite–in the text of your essay and in a list of References–at least five sources, which must be accessible via the Shapiro Library databases or Google Scholar. You must include:

1. One book or e-book

2. At least three academic sources (one of which may be your book or e-book)

3. Recommended: One non-text source (nonfiction documentary, television program, audio program, personal interview*, etc.)

*A personal interview does not count toward the five-source requirement because it is not cited in the APA list of References.

You must have a clear thesis, you should argue your points persuasively, and you should anticipate the opposition’s arguments and try to counter them in your essay.Your sources must be carefully documented in APA format, and your essay must be accompanied by a title page, an abstract, and a list of References. These requirements do not count toward the required page length.

Criteria for evaluation:

• Analysis: explanation of the subject and clearly identified thesis statement that forecasts your essay’s main ideas, which will be supported by specific evidence in the body of the essay

• Organization: essay is coherently organized around a controlling idea, with individual paragraphs that include identifiable topic sentences and material related to topics

• Engagement with source material: using quotes and paraphrase in a balanced way, attaching source material to your own words and thoughts and demonstrating ongoing analysis of this material, carefully balancing the use of all sources; APA References page

• Readability: use of proper standards for a formal essay; appropriate citational form for both in-text citations and References entries; grammar, mechanics, spelling, etc.; mistakes found by careful editing, such as run-ons, fragments, subject-verb agreement, etc.

research plan:

A research plan narrates your research process and provides a “snapshot” of your argument and the way that you will use your sources; an annotated bibliography summarizes sources for your reader. In preparation for your final project, you must prepare and submit a three-part research plan AND an annotated bibliography of at least five (5) sources (one should be a book, and at least three should be from peer-reviewed academic journals).

The research plan should be divided into three parts:

1. Introduction (1-2 paragraphs): Introduce the topic and make clear your research question.

2. Research Overview (1-2 pages): Explain your data collection method and the inclusion/exclusion of research articles. Which articles did you reject and why? What databases were most helpful? What was the most difficult about your data collection method?

3. Discussion Overview (1-2 pages): Explain the debate and how the research explores your topic. What articles support your claim (point of view)? Which articles act as the opposing viewpoints that you will accommodate or refute?

The research plan will be followed by the annotated bibliography: Your five (5) sources must be cited in correct APA format, and below each Reference entry, you will annotate the source by doing the following in one paragraph per source:

(A) Summarize the source

(B) Evaluate the authority or background of the author(s)

Who is the author and what are his/her credentials?
Is the source credible?
Is it reliable?
Is the information accurate?
What is the purpose of the source? publication?

(C) Comment on the intended audience

(D) Compare or contrast this work with another you have cited in the bibliography or otherwise put the source in conversation with other sources

(E) Explain in detail how you will use this source in your research paper (what purpose does it serve? how will you use it academically?)

(F) Include a quote with a correctly formatted APA in-text citation that you might use in your research paper

Because preparing an annotated bibliography gives you an opportunity to research and evaluate your sources and their applicability to your project, I highly recommend that you annotate more than five. As your project progresses, you may find your sources more or less useful, and annotating more than five saves you time as you put the finishing touches on your essay.
