Black Panther Organization in 1960s Intercultural Conflict Paper There are detailed instructions amongst the files that I am providing. I am providing a proposal that I have already written as well. The paper needs to include two imperatives as well as two overarching ideas which I have outlined in my proposal. The proposal will help a lot, and outlines the ideas needed. Four academic sources and citations from online are required as well as citations/quotes from the textbook. I will provide you with the textbook sources shortly.A bibliography is also required. Emergence of the Black Panthers
For my second intercultural communications paper I will be discussion emergence of the
Black Panther organization during segregation in the 1960s. Two concepts that we have
discussed in class that fit with this topic is anglocentrism and how when taking critical
perspective on the issue, it is easy to see how this conflict arose. The conflict here is one that we
have studied for a very long time, and is also a conflict that is still ongoing. Racial inequality in
the United States has stemmed from a long history of slavery and segregation, and the overall
power difference between white americans and African Americans. The Black Panthers were
originally created in as a response to police brutality against the African American community
and was active throughout the 1960s until the 1980s. Seen in pictures and documents was the
arming of black citizens as a protest and scare tactic to the police, but the black panthers were
much more than that. They were a symbol of freedom and rebellion against the racial ways of
white america and its police force. Their ideals still stick in todays world because police
brutality against the african american community is still widely witnessed and racial equality is
still a goal that is being worked towards. Two imperatives that fit well into this topic are the
peace imperative and the ethical imperative.
The peace imperative fits because it basically questions whether different cultures and
races can coexist peacefully on this planet, and that throughout history the meshing of different
cultures has brought about hostility. We can see this all throughout the emergence of the Black
Panther Party and segregation in general. In this time peacefully coexisting was nothing short of
fiction, and since then we have moved in the right direction, but complete peace between
cultures has not been reached. The ethical imperative comes into play with the actions of the
police force and their brutality towards the black community, but also in the non-action of the
white community by standing by and letting this happen, and even condoning it. This was a time
period of great ethical dilemma and the moral codes and values of the white community was in
question, which cause great civil unrest. We understand now that the actions of the police force
and the white community were unethical, but for them, their society and culture allowed this and
deemed it ethical. It is easy to carry out brutality and violence if your society condones it. The
difficult part of this ethical dilemma is that each person and group can have a different picture
and idea of what is ethical and what is not.
RQ: What does the emergence of the Black Party and segregation in the US tell us about
what it takes for two cultures to coexist completely peacefully, if it is possible at all?
I will investigate the relationship between white america and its police force and the
black community in the US during the 1960s through the 1980s. I will examine primary sources
and accounts from members in the Black Panther party, and also from members of the African
American community here in the US during this time to get their perspective on what the party
meant to them. The creation the the party stems from the cultural relationship in this period. I
will also investigate the true roots that lead to this problem in the US and will be using the
textbook as well as academic sources and other outside research to help me with this project.
COMM 3410 Intercultural Communication Short Paper
Paper #1
This paper should be submitted to the Canvas folder on D2L by 11:59 pm on February 25th. You are
welcome to turn the paper in early. Your paper should be 4-5 pages double spaced. Format your paper in
accordance with APA guidelines. You do not need an abstract, but should include a cover page and
proper references.
You will apply one or two intercultural communication concepts of your choice to the paper option and
issue you identified in proposal #1. You will outline specific links between components of the concept
and the topic. What insights does the concept give you about the topic/issue? Answering this question will
be the biggest part of this project. Then, evaluate what is important about the topic/issue that this theory
cannot help you to explain or analyze.
Include at least 4 academic citations within your paper (Other than the textbook).
For the best papers, you will want to select specific aspects of the concept and provide a detailed,
nuanced, and in-depth application of that concept. For instance, if you select histories, you will likely
want to narrow one step further to use one or two types of histories.
Papers that are especially insightful will use your selected concept to hone in on, explain, or offer a
critique of a communicative problem that the organization is experiencing.
Your paper should demonstrate your familiarity with relevant intercultural concepts and provide clear
links between the topic and those concepts. You should also be sure that you provide a sufficiently
detailed explanation of the topic/issue you are concerned with (draw on parts of your proposal) so that I
can understand what processes you are describing. You will be evaluated based upon:
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)
the insightfulness of your analysis
the cohesion of your argument (an overall thesis is developed)
the appropriateness of the match between your selected concepts and intercultural topic
the accuracy of your use of course concepts
the completeness of your analysis (the amount and quality of evidence and explanation you
provide)
f) the professionalism of your product (including quality of writing, grammar, spelling,
organization, APA, and clarity)
A potential outline to guide your thinking*:
1. Introduction
o Briefly introduce the topic/issue in a paragraph or two
o Brief definition of the concept and aspects you will focus on
o Include a thesis statement linking the issue to the concept under examination
2. Application of concept to topic/issue:
o Use of relevant evidence as highlighted under investigation method in proposal #1:
draw on direct quotes from news articles and other examples to illustrate each point you
are making as you connect the topic to the concept
o Discussion of what this concept allows you to see or explain about the topic (use of
evidence)
o
Discussion of what you cannot explain through this concept
3. Conclusion
o Summarize main ideas discussed and limitations
* You could write this paper many ways, but make sure that you address each of the components
addressed throughout this assignment description.

Social Movements and Intercultural Conflict: You will identify a social movement that
emerged due to intercultural conflict. Explain which groups are at conflict and describe the
intercultural relationship between the cultural groups. You will be expected to contextualize the
relationship between the two groups, historically explain the cultural group that created the
movement, and discuss the social, political, and/or cultural issues that led to the emergence of the
movement. For example, how does power and context play a role in the emergence of the social
movement and the intercultural conflict? Furthermore, you will describe the goals of this social
movement and why this movement is relevant to the study of intercultural communication? You
are expected to use course concepts to further explain and understand the intercultural conflict
and social movement. This is a research assignment and thus you will need 4 academic sources
to supplement our course readings. Said plainly, you need 4 academic sources in addition
