It is especially important to take the time to understand artwork that can easily be mis-interpreted. In fact, all artwork benefits from truly understanding its true context and meaning. Remember that all artwork is created in a society and culture that forms its standards, ideals, values, visual aesthetic standards, etc.
In other words, art is influenced by the complete context that it is from (historical, cultural, religious, political, etc). When looking at art from various cultures, and various times in history, it is always best to keep your mind open. That way, you can better understand the art and that culture that it is from.
