Research Paper

To complete English 102, you will need to write an argumentative research paper.  Your paper should pose an argument and use outside sources to defend your idea and refute the opposition.  YOU MUST SCORE AT LEAST  70% ON THE RESESARCH PAPER TO PASS ENGLISH 102.

This paper must include the following:

1. 7-9 pages
2. A minimum of 7 sources about a previously approved topic.
3. A complete MLA styled bibliography with your rough draft and final draft.
4. 16 quotes minimum

I will evaluate the research paper for its use of primary and secondary sources, the analysis, development, and presentation of the argument, and its use of MLA guidelines (follow my quotation guidelines strictly – see guidelines sheet on Blackboard).  I will also be grading the work on structure (introduction, one idea per paragraph, how you handle the opposition, conclusion, how useful are your quotes).

Note on sources:  Sources must be academic in nature (academic journals, statistics analysis, government surveys, etc).  No .com, pop culture news, Wikipedia, encyclopedia, dictionary, or television media may be used.

Three of your sources may be from professional news sources (NY Times, The Economist, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, etc.. Also, it is okay to consult the online text of these news outlets, but you must be able to site them correctly in your MLA citation page.).

Also, you may use up to two sources (max) that we have discussed in class.  Your best bet is to ask me if the source is okay if you are unsure.
