What were the variables examined? Identify them as IV and DV (note that there can be more than one IV or DV). If you get confused, remember to formulate the sentence: The effects of (IV) on (DV); often you find the main variables in the title of the article, in the Abstract, and at the end of the Introduction section.

What was the hypothesis (there can be more than one)? You will find this at the end of the Introduction (NOT the Abstract) just before the Methods section.

Materials and Methods

Describe the participants in the study. If there was more than one study, write them up for each study: How many participants were there in total, age range, gender breakdown, any other essential information on participant demographics? Describe the sampling method. This information will be found in the Methods section.

Describe the MATERIALS used to test the hypothesis. Note that there is a lot of testing in experiments, some of the testing may not be related to hypothesis testing rather to trying to avoid confounds. Reread the hypothesis and zoom in on how they tested them: name the tests they used and tell us how they manipulated the IV (what groups/treatment conditions did they create and how were they different from each other). This is part of the Methods section.

Please describe what study design was used: Tell us if it was an experiment or quasi-experiment, then add whether it was a between-subject, within-subject, matched-subject, or, factorial design. The latter may not be explicitly stated but I want you to figure it out based on the information given.

Note that in a quasi-experiment, the group assignment is determined by a personal characteristic and it is not the choice of the researcher, i.e.: if it is a study on ADHD with a control group, all people with ADHD will be in one group and the control group will be people without ADHD so there cannot be random assignment. In a factorial design, there is more than one independent variable.

Describe the procedure of the experiment which is the chronological sequence of events. Only put in what is essential to understand how the experiment was conducted. This is part of the Methods section.

Results

Report the results of the hypothesis testing. Do not get sidetracked by results from testing that did not relate to the hypothesis. Note that the detailed results can be found in the Results section. This section often becomes overwhelming if you are not used to reading them. In that case, go to the Abstract and also the first portion of the Discussion section to find a simple explanation of what was found. It will be sufficient to summarize the results in that form. If you feel more confident, add some numbers from the results section. Look for statistical significance.

Discussion

Critically evaluate the experiment: What are the strength and the weaknesses? The study will discuss this in the Discussion section but you can add your own critical thoughts here. What were the limitations of the study? Why is this study important and who would benefit from the results and how? How can future studies build on the results from this study?
