report and the presentation.

Curriculum Mode: Professional Task
Format
The report: A report is a specific form of writing that is organised around concisely identifying and
examining issues, events, or findings that have happened in a physical sense, such as events that
have occurred within an organisation, or findings from a research investigation. These events can
also pertain to events or issues that have been presented within a body of literature. The key to
report writing is informing the reader simply and objectively about all relevant issues. There are
three features that, together, characterise report writing at a very basic level: a pre-defined structure,
independent sections, and reaching unbiased conclusions
( http://owll.massey.ac.nz/assignment-types/what-is-a-report.php).
The presentation: Being able to express yourself clearly and convincingly is a skill needed in all
kinds of situations. Preparation is one of the most important parts of delivering an effective
presentation and it can also help to control the nerves – you can never over-prepare! Estimate the
time available for your presentation so that you can decide on how much information you can
include. Be realistic about how much material you can cover as it is important that you keep within
your time limit. Collate all the information and ideas and organise them in a logical sequence.
Remember that the presentation is telling a story and this must be clear and logical to the listener.
If used in the correct way, Powerpoint slides can greatly enhance your presentation. They can be
used to highlight key points and display images or diagrams. It is important that your visual aids
clarify and support your data in an attractive and comprehensive way. They should not detract from
your presentation ( https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/metallurgy-materials/about/cases/tipsadvice/presentation.aspx). Good presentations “tell a story”and keep the audience interested. Poor
presentations are disjointed and unclear, are read from powerpoints, are spoken too fast and/or too
quietly to understand, ignore the audience, and leave the audience bored.
The reflection paper: The reflection paper of 500 words must be about your own thinking about
your learning during the group work assignment. Over the course of the group assignment, think
about what and how you are learning, not in terms of the content of the assignment but in terms of
what you are learning in completing the assignment. A reflection which simply lists what was done
will not achieve a passing grade: there must be some analysis of events or situations from which
you learned and a discussion of what and how you learned. Do not simply state what you have
learned: you need to explain the experience of that learning.
A good model to use is the following:
Describe: Describe what happened
Feelings: How did it make you feel?
Evaluate: What was good or bad?
Analyse: What sense can you make of the situation? (Include external issues)
Conclude: What general and specific conclusions can you draw?
Action: What next, or what will you do next time?
(Adapted from Western Sydney University School of Nursing and Midwifery 2016, pp. 70-72).
SPARK is used in this unit. SPARK is a self and peer evaluation tool. It adjusts the report grade of
team members according to how other team members rate that person’s contribution to the Report
and to the Presentation. SPARK also adjusts your grade down if you over-rate your contributions
relative to how your peers have evaluated you and up if you under-rate your contributions. It is
possible to receive a mark of more than 100%. SPARK is entered via Assessment 3. It will open
late in Week 9 and is available until Friday of Week 10.
Failure to undertake SPARK evaluations will result in a deduction of 50% of the group work mark.
Instructions
Report: The report must be in standard report format as follows:
– Title page including title, author and date, and for whom it is written
– Contents page including all numbered Headings and Sub-headings and page numbers
– Executive Summary
– Body of the report, divided into sections with descriptive numbered Headings and Sub-headings,
including a Recommendations section
– References (in Western Sydney Harvard style)
– Appendices if necessary (appendices are excluded from the word count)
SPARK adjustments will be made to individual grades for the report in relation to the team
members evaluation of each other’s effective participation.
Presentation: In professional contexts, only one person presents the team’s report. Therefore, only
one person from each team will present. The presentation is worth 15 marks out of 35, so it is very
important to your overall grade. All team members are expected to contribute to the development of
the presentation and visual aids and to support the presenter in their practising of the presentation.
For more information see Assessment 3 Format and Resources.
SPARK adjustments will be made to individual grades for the presentation in relation to the team
members evaluation of each other’s effective participation.
Reflection: Your reflection should be a genuine evaluation of your learning in the group, and must
include at least one detailed example of learning. It should not be a summary of how you organised
the group and what happened over the quarter.
The Report: Communication strategies in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic
Your team will be allocated an industry. Within that industry, your team will select a significant
Australian business, such as Coles within the food retail industry, and a US business within the
same industry, such as Walmart, which is a major American food retailer.
The report has been commissioned by a a third major business within the same industry, such as
Woolworths in the food retail industry. The commissioning business is seeking a review of
communication strategies used by its Australian competitor and the US business. On the basis of
this review, the commissioning business wants recommendations with respect to shortfalls in its
own communication strategy.
The audience for the presentation of the report is a group of executives of the commissioning
business.
Your teams will work collaboratively within class time on the report and presentation.
Studiosity is available on the vUWS website (see Study Smart on the home page of vUWS), and the
teaching staff strongly suggest each group use it to improve the expression and flow of the report.
