The choice of a favorite restaurant was an easy choice to make, even though it is a chain restaurant, it is one of the best. What was found while researching the restaurant was surprising in the fact that it is just one line in the companys portfolio. The restaurant that was researched was Flemings Prime Steakhouse, the service and food in these places are beyond outstanding. What was not known is that this restaurant is owned by Outback Steakhouse Incorporated (OSI) owns Bonefish Grill, Carrabbas Italian Grill, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Flemings Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Lee Roy Selmons, Paul Lees Chinese Kitchen, and Roys. Finding this out, it also reminded me of why I also like Outback, the food is good for the type of restaurant it is and the service is normally outstanding.
I have seen the manager in pretty much all of these restaurants that I have been in, they have normally been seen moving around the restaurant, checking with customers to see how everything is going, maybe asking if you are there for a special occasion, which the server has already asked. From what has been witnessed and had happen personally, is that the servers all handle everything themselves, there is no need to consult with someone. If someone asks, as we did, if the menu items could be changed up, the server said, absolutely, whatever you want. Every person inside Flemings acts like they own the place, they are happy, make the customer feel comfortable, and make sure every detail is taken care of. The servers even hand you a business card with their name and restaurant number on it, in case you liked their service enough to request them the next time you come in.
The philosophy of OSI is that they need to hire the right talent, they also promote dedicated and ambitious manager that are homegrown. They understood that people come first but they expanded that to include, employees, suppliers, customers, and lastly, the community. In their eyes, all of these groups of people should take precedence over any of the others. They also took a hard look at turnover and realized that this was costing them money, they changed their model to include managing partners and joint venture partners, and this replaced a manager and district manager. This gives them more of a feel as a partner, which they become, managing partners must invest twenty five thousand dollars of their own money (Sullivan, 2005). OSI also listens to their employees of individual restaurants, some of their most important innovations have come up through the ranks. The term No rules, just right and what is commonplace now days, the curbside takeaway, both came from employee suggestions (Sullivan, 2005). They believe that a restaurant must be fully trained and fully staffed, they only have servers take three tables at a time, this allows them to get those who want, out quickly or let other customers just have a relaxing meal.
The approach that OSI has taken can be found in our readings, improve human capability, training, which helps to strengthen creativity and commitment (Yukl, 2013). This happens most often when the right people are hired and allowed to thrive within the organization.
