Sociology of Sexuality: The Human Rights Campaign
Organization Name: The Human Rights Campaign (HRC).
An American non-profit Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer
(LGBTQ) advocacy group
Organization’s operations: The Human Rights Campaign addresses issues of interest to the
LGBTQ society and persons in America. It strives to address the social, legal, and social
discrimination faced by LGBTQ persons in American society. The organization does so by
engaging in political lobbying for LGBTQ-centric laws, policies and politicians, education
programs, research, legal representation, healthcare programs and funding of LGBTQ advocacy
groups and programs nationwide.
Organization’s goals: The organization’s goal is to end discrimination against LGBTQ persons
and achieve a world in which LGBTQ persons are assured of equal and fair treatment and can
live as full members of society in their homes, workplaces and the community as a whole.
Analytical tools: The plan to use two analytical tools; Sexual scripts and identities
Social Problems Addressed: Below are the major issues addressed by the organization. These
issues will form the basis of the case study discussion.
1. Workplace and employment discrimination of LGBTQ persons
This is an issue that is at the heart of the Human Rights Campaigns goal for equity, acceptance
and fair treatment of LGBTQ persons in America. As a marginalized group in America, they are
subjected to discrimination in their workplace and are even denied employment they qualify for

2. Health, Healthcare equity, and HIV among LGBTQ people
Healthcare is an important issue facing LGBTQ people in America. It is an issue that the Human
Rights Campaign uniquely focuses on though its HIV and Health Equity and Health and Aging
programs. LGBTQ people are disproportionately affected by health issues such as HIV while
also facing discrimination and unequal treatment when seeking out or receiving healthcare
services. This topic explores health issues impacting LGBTQ people, especially HIV/AIDS and
mental health, the challenges they face when seeking healthcare services, and the protections
granted to them. The sources employed in this section include;

Overview.
Why the Human Rights Campaign?
I selected the Human Rights Campaign as the organization for my case study due to its size,
impact, and involvement in LGBTQ advocacy in the United States. It is the largest LGBTQ
advocacy group in America with a rich history in instigating legal, political and social changes
that better serve the LGBTQ community in America. An example is their involvement in the
repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy for LGBTQ service members in the United States
military. This makes it an ideal organization for the case study.
