BIO 497 Point Loma Nazarene University Integration of Science and Faith Essay I have attached the rubric below. Must be around 1400-1600 words along with a minimum of 5 sources, 3 of them must be from books or articles, and the others can be websites if you like. I don’t mind if you chose option 1 or option 2 for the topic, just please be clear and detailed in your reasoning because this teacher expects a lot from us due to the fact that she is very picky and harsh on grading. Let me know if you have any questions! Thank You! BIO 497 Integration of Science & Faith Essay – (revised Fall 2019)
“I write in order to know what I think”… St. Augustine
Assignment directions:
1) Choose to answer one of the following questions:
Option 1: Do you believe that an acceptance of evolution as an explanation for biodiversity on earth can be reconciled with the Christian faith?
Option 2: For you personally, what does caring for the environment have to do with Christian faith?
2) The paper should focus a personal reflection of your thoughts and beliefs on this topic, but you need to support your position with several sources, and also
include one or two sources that you can use to present at least one alternative position.
**You need at least 5 quality references, at least 3 of which should be from books and/or academic-style articles. References should be listed in APA
style as follows (books, websites, and articles will be the most likely sources used):
a) Website (individual): Last, F.M. (Year, Month, Date Published). Article Title. Website Title. Retrieved Month Date, Year, from URL.
b) Website (organization): Name of organization (Year, Month, Date Published). Article title. Website Title. Retrieved Month Date, Year, from URL.
c) Book: Last, F.M. (Year Published) Book title. City, State: Publisher
d) Article: Last, F.M., First M. Last (of secondary authors). “Article title”. Journal name. Volume (issue #); Date published; pages.
**For Sources/Reference Page- Each reference must include annotations, as shown in these examples:
Smith, John R. (2013, December 3). The Bioethics of End-of-Life Care. The New York Times. Retrieved 11-11-15 from http://www.nytimes.com
**Dr. John R. Smith is a professor of bioethics at Harvard University, and conducts research on this topic; this is a reliable source because of his credentials. This article provides an
overview of the issues involved in end-of-life choices faced by both hospitals and families. This is used as an introduction to the entire issue. On page 13 Smith defines the options for end of
life decisions, and there is a great quote on pg 14 that I will use to reflect the ethical issues involved.
Jones, Sally (2012). Stem Cell Research; Are the Benefits Worth Murder? No Embryonic Stem Cell Research.org, Retrieved 11-24-15 from http://www.noESCresearch.org
**This online site is written from the perspective of a highly conservative religious organization. It includes some correct facts about stem cell research, but from a standpoint of obvious
bias. It cites scientific information, but is not written by scientists themselves. It was used to portray one side of the issue. In the 4th paragraph there is a clear example of how the author is
only considering some of the data and not all of it. I will use that to show that one can pick and choose their data and this is not an accurate (not ethical either) way to influence people.
3) Write and submit the essay
You are to write a well-conceived and organized essay to answer the question that you chose. The essay should be 1200 – 1600 words, but the grade will
be based more on completeness and whether the argument is adequately supported than on length. Clearly state your position, then support it using a
synthesis of the sources that you gathered, as well as specific concepts that you have learned in your PLNU classes. In addition, present at least one
alternative position, and clearly state the argument(s) against that position in a hospitable manner. The essay should include some reflection on how your
position on this topic has either changed, or been strengthened, during your time at PLNU. You may use sections of papers that you have written as part of

other PLNU courses, but clearly state this fact and explain how it is useful in THIS paper (i.e. In my Phil class, I wrote this answer…) See the following
rubric for details on essay grading.
Focus your essay on any particular aspect of your chosen topic as long as you have a defendable position that fulfills the requirements as shown in the
grading rubric below. This should be written towards the audience of a college student with a biology background who may be struggling
personally with the topic at hand (i.e. possibly written towards the freshman year version of yourself; what you would want to say to yourself about a
topic you may have been struggling with at the time).
Each reference in your annotated bibliography should appear within the text of your paper at least once as follows: (Smith, 2010, p.45). Quotes should be
kept to a minimum, and be sure to summarize, paraphrase, and cite ideas appropriately. An interview or any type of personal communication is not
considered recoverable data, so no reference to this is provided in the reference list, and it can’t be counted as a reference. However, you may cite the
interview or personal communication within the text as follows: (J. Smith, personal communication, February 15, 2018).
