selected.
Industry Factors for Stock
Text begins here. Provide an overview of the context or background of the
selected stock. Provide a brief synopsis of factors that are present in your stock.
Reason for Stock Selection
Text begins here. Why did you select this stock? Can you provide a variety of
examples why this one was interesting, you heard great things about the stock, or
possibly have researched it previously? An example of an APA cited reference is
provided.
Jones (2010) stated that employee turnover in the health care industry averages
46% across the nation. According to Smith (2010), employee turnover contributes to loss
of both revenue and customers. The numbers and citations anchor the existence of the
problem.
Steps to Gather Data

Appendix A: Rubric of the Portfolio Project
Portfolio Stock Research Project Description
For this project, you are to research the financials of the selected industries and analyze
necessary data from an evaluation perspective to determine if the selected stock will
increase or decrease the risk of the portfolio. Based upon your analysis, write a summary
of the recommendations regarding the selected stock and an evaluation of the beta for
your stock and other indicators. The discussion of the beta must include what happens to
the risk of the portfolio when the stock is included and what happens when it is removed.
Does the risk of the portfolio increase or decrease and why? Provide a rationale for your
recommendations.
It is important in this course for you to understand real world scenarios that may involve
evaluations necessary to make informed decisions about corporate finance. This case
provides you an opportunity to think through the process, analyze a real-life situation,
determine if the selected stock may or may not provide value to the portfolio, and provide
a rationale for your decisions. Each evaluation conducted will increase your awareness
and provide useful techniques for both personal and business decisions this project
allows you to research what will be required and how to make an informed decision.
Consider the following items when developing your framework;
a) The industry the stock is in,
b) tools used to evaluate the market,
c) a determination for your evaluation, and
d) summary: Does this stock increase or decrease risk to the portfolio.
In addition, the rationale for any decisions you make regarding the selected stock would
be important to describe.
Use any type of graphic, chart, or table (no more than one graph per page with a
maximum of three graphs) that you feel would be useful to help support your
recommendation so that investors can understand and make a decision whether to retain
the stock or remove it from the portfolio.
As you work on this case, you may need to make assumptions where there is insufficient
information. Make sure to state your assumptions clearly up front then you are free to
build from them.
Use the information provided in class during week 2 as your well-diversified portfolio
for your calculations. Final stock prices will be established in Week 7 of the class.
Grading Considerations
8
Create a concise 7-10 pages, double-spaced professionally presented report (Microsoft
Word). This report should include:
1. A brief review of the selected stocks. This includes a short discussion of the
stocks value and risk attributed in the portfolio,
2. A brief description of the steps used to gather the data. Provide enough detail that
an investor, corporate management, stakeholders, customers, etc. could make a
decision,
3. The steps used for making the recommendation and any other considerations, if
any, that may need to be addressed, and
4. Your recommendation for evaluating the selected stock and rationale.
When assignment is complete, name the file with your last name, first initial,
underscore Portfolio underscore the symbol of the stock (i.e.
EnsignJ_Portfolio_RCL), and submit the Word document to the Assignments Tab
in the World Classroom. The paper must process through TurnItIn and have a
score of less than 30.
The expectation is that you will provide a professionally written paper, without
organizational, grammatical, or spelling errors. Any literature reference to literature will
conform to APA 6 formatting. If the paper does not meet these expectations, a reduction
in points will result.

Portfolio Information
For this project, suppose you work for a small firm and based on your experience in
corporate finance, the owner asks your team for your recommendations about investing
the money she just received worth approximately $300,000 and she wants to invest in
stocks. She wants a diversified portfolio consisting of stocks invested in different
industries; the stocks have betas that are determined by the portfolio selected during week
1. For the purposes of this project our portfolio is well diversified.
For example, in a portfolio (beta 1.1) with four stocks the weight of each stock in the
portfolio is $25,000/$100,000 = 25%. The portfolios beta will be bp = 1.1:
bp = 25%(0.6) + 25%(1.2) + 25%(1.2) + 25%(1.4) = 1.1
The second important fact is that the standard deviation of a well-diversified
portfolio, ?p, is approximately equal to the product of the portfolios beta and the market
standard deviation:
?p = bp?m
10
Go to http://finance.yahoo.com/q/rk?s=SPY and review the information for the S&P 500.
For calculating the market standard deviation (?m) for this project, use the S&P 500
3-year standard deviation.
Comparing the 3-year standard deviation of the S&P 500, we can see that when
compared to the 5-year standard deviation which shows an improvement of 5.44% or a
decrease in market risk.
An example will be passed out in class.
Select a stock from your respective industry to conduct your project. A link to the sector
