Final Project Scenario:
You have been appointed as the Infection Control Director of a newly established hospital in your
region. CEO of the organization wants you to establish a comprehensive Infection Prevention and
Control Program that should be implemented in all patient care areas of the hospital. Following are the
hospital data:
Infrastructure:
Total Bed Capacity = 280 beds
Adult ICU = 30 beds
NICU = 10 beds
ER = 12 beds
Dialysis = 20 beds
AIIRs*: (Total # 05)
Adult ICU = 02
NICU = 1 AIIR
ER = 1 AIIR
Dialysis = 1 AIIR
Human Resources:
Doctors = 90
Nurses = 300
Housekeeping = 60
Allied healthcare workers = 70
*AIIR: Airborne Infection Isolation Room
Project Work:
Considering the above-mentioned data of the hospital, develop a comprehensive IPC program based on
best evidence-based and reference national or international standards and linked with national health
facility accreditation body, CBAHI. Your project should include plans for all aspects of an effective IPC
program including but not limited to:
o Organizational structure of the IPC program including goals, mission and clearly defined
objectives, IPC staffing, IPC link staff and IPC program components and activities
o A plan to write or adapt and adopt national IPC guidelines and polices
o Infection Control Committee
o IPC plan based on risk assessment
o Surveillance plan including microbiology support
o IPC education plan
o Epidemiologic investigations (outbreak management)
o Monitoring and evaluation (setting process and outcome indicators)
o Performance improvement projects
o A plan for IPC resources and supplies
The required deliverables of your project are:
1. A written report of not less than 5,000 words that you will turn in the first for review and grading.
See “special considerations for written Report”.
2. A 7-minute presentation. See “special considerations for Project Presentation”.

Special Considerations for Written Report:
– Your report should not be less than 5,000 words and not more than 1,0000 words (Use Microsoft
Word for words counting).
– Use “Arial” font, size 12 and 1.15 line spacing and set adequate margins. Headlines could be
distinguished using another font or size.
– Try to use evidence-based references. If you need access to any unopen article, guidelines or any
other helpful materials, please contact your supervisor or the program coordinators in the
Ministry.
– Cite any information taken from another source. You will need to cite sources within the body of
your report and at the end of the report in your references section.
For example, if you include this information in your report: “….as the CDC recommends
that hospitals implement antimicrobial stewardship program)
You should have in-text citation:
“….as the CDC recommends that hospitals implement antimicrobial stewardship
program (1)”
The in-text citation should correspond to a numbered reference in the reference section:
1. Pollack, L. A., & Srinivasan, A. (2014). Core elements of hospital antibiotic stewardship
programs from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Clinical Infectious
Diseases, 59(suppl_3), S97-S100.
– Write your references correctly. A citation in this manner is not appropriate:
1. CDC
Instead your reference should be written in this manner (you may use any referencing style):
1. Pollack, L. A., & Srinivasan, A. (2014). Core elements of hospital antibiotic stewardship
programs from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Clinical Infectious
Diseases, 59(suppl_3), S97-S100.
– You may submit your report (PDF and Microsoft Word) through Blackboard any time before June
18, 2019. Submit your report only when it is final; there will be no resubmission. Any report
submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
– It is expected that the report contains no spelling or grammar mistakes.
– Use formal language and avoid including pictures in your report unless necessary.
– Do not include any information in your report unless you fully understand it. You will be asked
verbally, during the presentation, about any included information in your report.
– Avoid plagiarism including paraphrasing a colleague’s work or substituting words to avoid
plagiarism. One reviewing committee will evaluate and compare all reports.
– Evaluation will be based on your depth of understanding, creativity and quality of your report.
National Infection Control Diploma Program
Special Considerations for Project Presentation:
– You will have 7 minutes to present and this time will be enforced.
– Your presentation should illustrate the core of your written report. Avoid including unnecessary
details in your presentation; the place to include the details should be in your written report.
– Evaluation will be based on the quality of presentation and on your performance in the
accompanied discussion and debate.
