Synthesizing and Writing
Due Week 4 and worth 100 points

When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking.

The assignment is divided into two (2) parts.
For Part I of the assignment (due Week 2), you read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes, reviewed the Procon.org Website in order to gather information, and engaged in prewriting to examine your thoughts.
* Remember that in the Week 2 Discussion, you examined the biases discussed in Chapter 2 of the webtext.

In Part II of the assignment (due Week 4), you will write a paper to synthesize your ideas.
Part II – Writing
Write at three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:
1. State your position on the topic you selected for Assignment 1.1.
2. Identify (3) three premises (reasons) from the Procon.org website that support your position and explain why you selected these specific reasons.
3. Explain your answers to the “believing” questions about the three (3) premises opposing your position from the Procon.org website.
4. Examine at least two (2) types of biases that you likely experienced as you evaluated the premises for and against your position.
5. Discuss the effects of your own enculturation or group identification that may have influenced your biases.
6. Discuss whether or not your thinking about the topic has changed after playing the “Believing Game,” even if your position on the issue has stayed the same.

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

This course requires use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
Based on the guidelines in SWS, “A well-researched assignment has at least as many sources as pages.” Since this assignment requires you to write at least 3-4 pages, you should include at least 3-4 references.

Introduction
Capital punishment or rather the death penalty is a topic that has been under debate for
decades now. Initially, during the olden days, the Death penalty was legal, and the law punished
the individual who had committed crimes like treason against the government or even murder by
death. However as the generations have gone by, Most countries have found it wise to abolish
death penalty terming it as dehumanizing and an inappropriate kind of punishment. The proponents
of the view that Capital punishment should be allowed offer differing viewpoints since they claim
that the sentence for death should be death and by initiating capital punishment, Criminals will be
warned and will learn the hard way that crime does not pay, (Procon.org, 2018). The opponents of
the view that Capital punishment should not be allowed to argue that the act is inhumane and
ruthless in all manner of ways as such it should not be allowed. I strongly agree that the death
penalty should be enacted once more to teach potential criminals a lesson and give them a taste of
their own medicine.
The aspect of civilization is very vital to talking about capital punishment. As a refuting
premise to my viewpoint that the death penalty should be allowed, Opponents of this view see at
barbaric and uncivilized. They claim that the action is somewhat cruel and outdated. This act only
used to be practiced in the olden days and bringing it to life would prove to be marked of
uncivilized people, (Tóth, 2017). Furthermore, the opponents further argue that we cannot use a
crime to punish a crime since there is will only breed resentment and instead of fixing things it
would just be making matters worse. I believe this point is right because the practice is somewhat
outdated and punishing a crime with a crime doesn’t necessarily solve the offense but instead
makes it only worse.

The second premise that refutes my standpoint has to deal with the aspect of preserving
human dignity and the appreciation for human life. The amnesty international opposes the death
penalty since it sees it as a violation of human rights and their dignity. Most constitutions around
the globe argue that every human being has a right to life and killing them takes away that right
from them, (Perry, 2016). This view is particularly interesting as it brings in the aspect of the law
and legal proses. It is thus justifiable since the executioners should follow the law to the later.
Though I view the death penalty as my preferred form of punishment, I also to some extent
conform to the fact that the law has to be followed and if the law denies death penalty then it should
be removed.
Thirdly the aspect that capital punishment does not deter a criminal from their ways but
rather only inflicts pain on them and their families as they wait for the time of the penalty. When
a criminal is sentenced to death, they do not reflect on making their lives better or changing but
instead are only mentally tortured as they wait for their demise. Torture of the mind is by far the
worst and cruelest. Also, the methods that are used to execute the prosecuted are so inhumane and
torturous that it goes against all laws on human torture, (Hood & Hoyle, 2015). The aspect of
mental anguish is fascinating and true since some family members can never recover from the
sight of their loved ones being executed let alone living with the guilt that they were not able to
give their loved ones a proper burial.
After reading the Pros and cons of the topic of allowing the death penalty, I have
reconsidered my opinions and found it only wise to support both sides of the argument. With many
references on the Believing game, I have learned to sideline my biases and approach the matter in
a more open-minded way. Capital punishment is both good and evil due to the reasons mentioned

in the above body paragraphs. I might be a bit biased in my premises as mentioned above both the
believing game has made it possible to approach the topic considering both the pros and cons.
In conclusion, it is important to note that I still stand my ground on allowing capital
punishment through am also persuaded to accept some of the cons of capital punishment. However,
capital punishment can be enacted on grounds such as murder since t is a severe crime. At least
once the culprit is also murdered the family of the victim will get some closure and consider justice
has been served for their lost loved ones. The law should thus not be so lenient on criminals who
have committed a hideous crime, but instead, the law should punish them heavily even if it entails
placing a death penalty on their heads otherwise if they are set free they might end up committing
the same crime.
