System Types in Intersection System
Im trying to study for my English course and I need some help to understand this question.
Introduction
All systems initiatives can be described using the four levels of system type discussed in this class: environmental, societal, organismic, and mechanistic. As industrial engineers, our most likely area of focus on most projects will be on societal systems and the organismic systems that have to work with, use, or consume the output of our societal systems. The mechanistic systems within these systems are the components that we tend to spend our time engineering, and the environmental system within which our target system will operate provides both resources and operational constraints. It is a very rare systems project that doesn’t include requirements at all four system levels.
Scenario: Traffic Flow Control System
A vehicular traffic intersection of arbitrary complexity, including
- a set of intersecting roadways
- multiple lanes in each direction for each roadway
- some lanes specialized for certain vehicle/usage types (e.g., motor vehicles, buses only, pedestrians, car pools, trains, light rail, etc.)
- some lanes specialized for certain directions of travel (e.g., left turn, straight, right turn, U-turn)
The scope of the system is to control access to and flow through the intersection in order to optimize traffic flow. The scope does NOT include any civil engineering issues related to the construction of the physical intersection. This is NOT about construction. Think of it as a control system that can be added to, or upgraded within, existing traffic intersections.
Instructions
For this assignment, you must create and submit a document (Microsoft Word or PDF preferred) that analyzes the scenario as a system in order to define how each of the four system types can be used to describe some aspect of the system. One of the system types might even be used to describe more than one aspect of the system. For each of your conjectured viewpoints, offer a short description of what it would mean for that aspect of the system to be considered high quality versus low quality.
A successful submission must:
- start with an effective title
- include at least one viewpoint for each of the four system types (environmental, societal, organismic, and mechanistic)
- for each viewpoint:
- describe how that aspect can be viewed using that system type
- describe what high or low quality might mean in that viewpoint
- use consistent margins and formatting throughout
- use several headings to separate key sections
- use proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar
- use only academically appropriate sources (although outside sources are NOT required)
- use your own words (avoid quotations from sources)
- properly cite any sources used, if any
- provide correct references to all cited sources
