SOC 101 Owens Community College Sociological Method Exercise Essay My expectations are to receive at least an 75% and the requirements are attached. The required textbook is Revel Society, 15e. Author is John J. Macionis. ISBN-13 is 9780134722979. Sociological Method Exercise
Sociological Method Exercise
Overview: This assignment is worth 10% of your final grade. Students try out the method of thinking sociologically, which consists of: observation; analysis; and insight.
The assignment requires effective selection and use of sociological tools that are introduced during Part I of the course. Using what you have observed in your journal
entries, I want you to analyze the data to explain what affect this form of media (your selected television show, along with the commercials) has had in socializing you;
making you part of the surrounding society. What was the message, the meaning, the norms, values, beliefs etc that you observed and interpreted. Is there a common
theme throughout the four shows; were women seen as secondary characters, what work were the characters doing, were the antagonist’s characteristics, etc. You may
have to look deep and use your sociological imagination. Second, what sociological insight can you interpret from your analysis of this observation. Using one of the three
classical sociological theories and please provide a reason behind your analysis. What purpose do these meanings provide for our society?
Requirements
Skills to Acquire for Meeting the Requirements
Section I Observe. In 1-2 full paragraphs, fully describe the media you have observed over the last 4 weeks. This observation may include a synopsis of the four shows
or something that stood out in each one. Such description includes: Details about the physical setting involved in the program, the props, the plot or the storyline, the
characters’ behaviors“ any and all that will be relevant and useful to your analysis. Remember: more details provide greater opportunity for a richer analysis. Only the
facts as you have observed them. Avoid any interpretations, added meaning, or sweeping generalizations.
Sociology is an empirical science based on the use of observation techniques. In this exercise, you will make direct observations. Your familiarity with participant
observation as a way of gathering information and achieving an understanding of behavior in social context figures importantly in this exercise. In this regard, Macionis’
chapter 2 discussion of observation and research techniques figures importantly.
Section II Analyze. Next, in 2-3 paragraphs, understand and/or make sense of your experience by putting to use the relevant tools (concepts and ideas) from the required
readings (weeks 1 – 4). Remember that you are attempting to analyze how this media has socialized you to acceptable cultural values, norms etc. As you apply these tools,
be mindful of how you have exercised the sociological imagination in the assignments leading up to this major written assignment. In particular, your question must
follow from the set of observations that you make and your sociological analysis will show how the social world contains an answer to the question posed.

To seek understanding or make sense of behavior in social context which is central to the methods exercise there are an assortment of concepts, such as, social identity,
social interaction, culture, socialization, and group effects (found in Macionis, chapters 1-6) that you may find useful. Use this exercise to select the right tools that will
help you better understand and/or make sense of the experience you have detailed in your observation.
Section III Probe for Insight. In 2-3 full paragraphs, use your analysis and interpret it using either a functionalist or social-conflict perspective. What you described in your
analysis does it serve a purpose for society beyond you? How would a functionalist interpret your analysis, or how would a conflict theorist interpret your analysis? To
understand society we have studied and discussed these two theories since week one. Using what you have learned please bring some insight to your analysis.
