The Indian removal act could be argued one of the most horrific things this has done. The removal off the Native Americans people was done by unlawful cases such as Worcester vs. Georgia and Cherokee vs. Georgia, both ruled in favor of the Cherokee people.

Cherokee vs. Georgia went to the Supreme Court and they ruled it was unlawful for the U.S. to impose on their land because they were a domestic dependent nation. This court case didn’t stop the Native Americans from being driven off their land. All of this happened under the watchful eye of Andrew Jackson. In this argument alone there is a room to point out genocide and ethnic cleansing causing the removal of the Native Americans to kill 4,000 of their people or 25 percent of their total population. I’m not sure when the disconnect happened, causing the colonist to change their views of the Native Americans. These people they wanted out so badly, were the reason why they were thriving to begin with teaching them techniques on how to hunt food like fish and to plant vegetables.

However, the Native Americans were the first to ever settle an entire continent. They increased their population more by hunting and farming. The Native Americans were able to set up trade routes across the continent. There were different kinds of foods being hunted. They hunted all kinds of different animals and seasonal mammals such as seals, salmon and whales. Also, their most important crop was corn. Corn became more popular and expanded throughout the continent.

Native Americans were the first to settle the whole continent of North America. Because they happened to be the first to settle across the entire continent they were able to hunt, gather and farm, adapt to the weather, increase the population, and more. since the Native Americans being able to adapt and increase the population is a big reason they were able to colonize North America.

As the Native Americans were settled they were able to set up trade routes across the continent. Their most important product was corn. At first it was mainly used in ceremonies, and later on “immigrants from the from Mesoamerica-began to cultivate corn on a large scale”. Meaning as more time when by corn became a bigger and more needed product throughout the continent.

Hunting for Native Americans was a really important factor for them to colonize the continent. Based on which part of the world they were in, there were different kind of food being hunted. If they were in the people in the arctic areas had to come up with technology such as waterproof boats to fish and hunt sea animal. people from the Pacific Northwest also got their food mainly from the sea, such as whales, salmon, and seals. Native Americans who settled in Florida also fish for their main source of food. Lastly people who settled in California hunted animals such as rabbits and deer. but also had fruits and nuts to eat also.

The Last important factor came from the Native Americans being able to adapt and increase the population is a big reason they were able to colonize North America. Adapting to the climate shifts allowed to hunters to know when to go out for seasonal hunts, and the farmers now knew when to start farming. Climate also affected trading back and forth across the continent for Native Americans.

“The First European to spearhead a transatlantic expedition was not Christopher Columbus, but rather a Norseman named Leif Ericson” (Schaller, 2018, 13) I find this very interesting because I didn’t learn that Christopher Columbus wasn’t the first to try to colonize The Americas until after I had graduated High School. It is very funny how things are told differently by those who “won” as the history books would say. Vikings even only had a measly one paragraph out of the whole chapter.

Though Vikings have a very harsh and savage image, “They were a cultured and sophisticated warrior class who understood, based on their religious belief, that in raiding other lands for personal gain they had everything to win and nothing to lose” (Mark, 2020) Their whole culture was based around their ability to gain things from the places they can take it from.

How different would our current lives be if the Vikings had simply been a little nicer or let go of their pride just a tiny bit and accepted some of the Native American’s ways. Though our reading states that the main reason the Viking’s settlements failed was because of the relations with the Natives, One source states “After spending the winter in Vinland, Eriksson and his crew sailed home to windswept Greenland with badly needed timber and plentiful portions of grapes. In spite of North America’s more bountiful resources, the Viking settlers remained in desolate Greenland.” (Klein, 2013)

In conclusion, whether the reason be relations, technologies, or simply needing to provide for the homeland, Vikings seemed to have been lost in the sands of time simply because they failed. Personally, I believe that history is history and even though we were not the very first to colonize North America, we should still have those who fail in our history books. You learn much more from failing than you do succeeding.

The Spanish’s colonization in North America was a success because of a mistake made by Christopher Columbus. Columbus was planning on sailing to Asia to expand the European rule, once he finally gaining the approval and financial help from the European government (Schaller), he unknowingly landed on the country of Cuba. Due to Columbus’s mistake, the Europeans began to explore the new land and try to make a name for themselves in this unknown area. While trying to make their new found land livable, the Native Americans came into the picture. The Native Americans supported and welcomed the foreigners – teaching them how to live on their land and welcoming their European lifestyles and habits. “The Indians did not fear them. There were not many settlers and there was enough land for everyone to use and plant crops.” (VOA) Unlike the Native American’s being willing to support the new settlers, the new settlers themselves were not as supportive and accepting. Unfortunately, the new settlers and the European government wanted the control of having more land and all the political advantages that it would entail.

The Europeans wanted to be the first to have a civilized body of land and residents in the new land. By having this new land they would be gaining new resources and many more natural resources that would be exported for money to improve their political status and power across seas in Europe.

The new settlers began to have a lack of respect or gratitude towards the natives as if they had not helped in any way. They became greedy. The new settlers did not accept their way of life – religiously and culturally, especially when it came to the food habits and the traditions of the natives. Because of this lack of acceptance, the natives did not offer their assistance much longer. This lead to many new settlers dying from common sickness that the natives have learned to cure and the abuse of land ownership. In England, the more land a person owned the wealthier it made them. But, the natives believed that no one could own the land because it belonged to the earth but anyone could use it (VOA). The new settlers hoped to gain religious freedom by coming to the new found land. As more and more settlers became to settle in North America, the more issues arose with the natives, including religious issues. The new settlers believed that Christianity was the only faith to be accepted, but the natives believed in the power of nature and the earth. The natives saw no issues with their beliefs since they have been successful for many years, but the unwillingness to change caused issues to the new settlers (VOA). They believed that the natives could not be trusted with anything – land, food, trading – just because they did not believe in the same God.
