Here is the assignment: The week’s assignment is to read Tom Gunning’s essay and watch two films: Nanook of the North and The Birth of a Nation. The film journal should respond to how these films address the notion of the other and how the cinematic techniques (editing, color tinting, acting, text, camera angles, etc) accentuate the otherness. You can compare the two works, or you can choose to focus on each individual work on its own. See if you can also include Gunning’s writing into your analysis of the works, focusing on narrative structure and the idea of the spectacle. The films are important as technical milestones, but the narratives themselves are highly problematic. Include a response to the issues of representation and how it is relevant to the events happening today (racism, classism, othering). I will be looking for how you present your ideas and contextualize all of the provided material.
