SPED 3303 Sam Houston State University Behavioral Incident Case Study For this assignment, you will identify and analyze a noteworthy “behavioral incident” that you have recently experienced. This could be an incident in a K-12 classroom, an interaction with a roommate, a workplace situation, or any other incident that you feel will allow you to address the parts listed below. When you describe each part think in terms of what you are learning about behavior. Use the vocabulary from the text and other resources to explain each part of the assignment.
In other words, you will demonstrate your knowledge of the behavior chain. Were there setting events? What was the antecedent? What was the consequence? Was the consequence reinforced through negative or positive reinforcement? As you use each term, define the term and use a citation.
Simply describing a behavioral incident will result in a failing grade.
1. Part 1 – The Incident. Provide an overview of the behavioral incident. This should include the basics of who, what, when, where, and how. This provides the reader with a picture of the “scene” and a sense of the key actors and circumstances. (1 paragraph)
2. Part 2 – The Actors. Provide a detailed description of the primary actors in the behavioral incident. Who engaged in the behavior? Who else was involved in behavioral scene before, during, and after? (1-2 paragraphs)
3. Part 3 – The Setting Events and Antecedents. Provide a careful analysis of the issues and actions leading up to the behavioral incident. What were the circumstances that led into the behavioral incident? What might the individual have experienced and or felt that day or days before engaging in the behavior (e.g., tired and stressed from a long day; father-in-law arrived unexpectedly)? What circumstances might have affected the other supporting actors? Define setting events and whether they played a role. Define antecedent and describe the trigger(s) to the behavior. (1-2 paragraphs)
4. Part 4 – The Consequences. Provide a description of the consequences resulting from the behavioral incident. What was the “fall out” from behavioral incident? What happened during and immediately after the behavior? What were the consequences for each of the actors (e.g., what did they do… how did they react… what were the tangible and emotional actions arising from the behavioral incident…)? Define the function of a behavior and describe the function of the behavior for your incident. (1-2 paragraphs)
5. Part 5 – The Recovery. Describe how the “story” concluded. How did the individual who was the centerpiece of the behavioral incident behave in the following hours and days? How did the other actors behave and act toward that person? Were there any other incidents or new behaviors or actions? (1 paragraph)
