ENC 1101 Keiser University Mother Tongue by Amy Tan Analysis Paper After reading Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” (pp. 697- 703), please respond to THREE of the following five questions. Provide 150 words per response, which will result in a total of 450 words for the assignment.
1. Dialogue is the conversation between two or more individuals in a given text. So with that in mind, what effect does Tan’s use of dialogue have on her essay? Would the story work as well without the dialogue? Why or why not?
2. Recall a time when you made a conscious choice to vary your language based your audience. Why did you alter your speech? What changes did you make? What was your intended goal?
3. Tan says that experts believe that a person’s “developing language skills are more influenced by peers”; yet she thinks that family is more influential, “especially in immigrant families.” In your opinion, who has more influence on an individual’s language: family or peers? Explain your answer.
4. Tan begins by announcing, “I am not a scholar…I cannot give you much more than personal opinions on the English language and its variations in this country or others.” How does this opening set up your expectations for the rest of the essay? Why do you think Tan chose to begin by denying her own authority?
5. Tan mentions how Asian-Americans are underrepresented in American literature. Name another group—it can be a group based upon race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, etc., etc.—that you feseel is underrepresented in a particular field. So for example, you may talk about how Group X seems to be underrepresented in the field of chemistry, or Group Y seems to be underrepresented in the field of mathematics, or Group Z seems to be underrepresented in the field of professional bowling. Once you have identified your specific group and your specific field, discuss why you think this underrepresentation exists.
