SMU Gender Identity Career Barriers & Transgender Transformation Reflectve Essay Reflection
You will write a response (75-100 words) to four questions that will focus on what you found, interesting, relevant, helpful, and confusing/controversial in each section. A “good response” is one that explicitly answers the question that is asked and is very clearly about something related to gender or sexuality. Write these in a word document first to ensure they are long enough. You may find it helpful to write these throughout the section as you come across information you want to discuss.
•WHAT was one idea or concept that you found particularly interesting?
•WHAT was most relevant to you in your own life in this section?
•WHAT was most helpful to you personally (or to your peers) in this section?
•WHAT was the most confusing and/or controversial idea or concept in this section?
below i will attach powerpoints of the course section What messages about gender are being sent to children who are given
the “gender-typical” costume, but NOT the “gender-atypical costume”?
Boys are aggressive, dangerous, active, mean and they like to scare
people and/or make them laugh (i.e., they’re pranksters).
Girls are beautiful, soft, not-to-be-taken-seriously, delicate, precious,
highly feminine, to be protected, and to be coddled.
What messages about gender are being sent to children who are given
the “gender-typical” play set, but NOT the “gender-atypical” playset?
Boys are doctors but also possibly that boys are dominant, smarter,
should be listened to, should be in charge, and should have high
ambitions. Girls are nurses but also possibly that girls are caring,
submissive, less intelligent, less educated, or that shouldn’t set their
ambitions too high.

Watch the video here about Josie Romero, whose parents allowed her
to transition to living as a girl at a young age. The article is interesting,
and does contain extra video footage, but the most important thing is
that you watch the video to try to get an understanding of what life is
like for a child who experiences an incongruity between their assigned
sex and their gender.

The second video I want you to watch is about Chaz Bono, who is the
child of Sonny and Cher. It’s a fascinating look at not only what
transitioning looks like for someone who is older (i.e., past the stage of
puberty), but also for someone who is famous. Chaz and Caitlyn Jenner
likely faced very similar pressures to “fit in” to society’s expectations,
given their celebrity status. There are sure to be more famous
transgender men and women over the next few years telling their
stories, but it’s important to be aware that being transgender may
“look different” for celebrities who have the advantages of all that
money can buy when it comes to looking appropriately or sufficiently
“masculine” or “feminine” to be accepted by society.
