Assignment Description
This assignment consists of a 300-word personal commentary essay (+/- 25 words) in
response to the following issue raised in Module 8:
Before Covid-19 threw the entire world topsy-turvy, we, in our little quiet Canadian
Communications 1160 world, were following a most pertinent CRTC public hearing on
the mobile wireless services review. The object of this Hearing along with the
divergent views expressed to the CRTC were covered in Module 8.
Your task:
-explain the rationale of this hearing, i.e. is there a problem; what is at stake?
-what is the position of those providers who find themselves directly targeted by this
hearing?
-in your opinion, what is the most likely outcome…and most importantly, what do
YOU think the outcome should be and with what tangible consequences?
Please express your reaction to this current issue by making as many pertinent
connections as possible to elements seen in the course up-to, and including, Mod. 8.
Please do NOT include any TITLE PAGE
-Above your answer, please add the following information:

a) Your name and student ID #
b) This answer contains xxx words. You are allowed a variation of plus or minus 25
words.
-Any submission that does NOT respect either of these two guidelines will
automatically incur a 10% penalty and cannot be re-submitted past the official
deadline.
The objectives of this assignment:
• Demonstrate your understanding of the course content by applying it, in a
concrete manner, to a current event taking place in the world of Canadian
media and telecommunications.
• Contribute to the development of your writing skills – specifically your ability to
write in a precise, organized, coherent and concise manner.
Prescribed Methodology
Your essay should explain how and why this specific news item applies, illustrates or
addresses some of the notions discussed in the modules seen up to this point, or
raised in the mandatory readings.
DO NOT simply copy-paste or restate information directly from the course content or
elsewhere. I will be looking for the quality and pertinence of the connections you are
making IN YOUR OWN TERMS.
Also, remember to focus on the actual issue raised in the news item. What are the
consequences or logical implications? How does that connect to what we have
learned?
Assignment Submission
This assignment is to be submitted via Brightspace on the course web page. You MUST
submit your file as a Word document (.doc). PDF files are NOT accepted nor are
documents produced with PAGES.

For your information, EVERY COMPUTER on campus is equipped with MS Word.
Furthermore, Google docs allows you to save in Word format.
Let’s agree on a common font:
CALIBRI, size 14, spacing at 1,5 lines…makes it easier to read, especially when you
have 250 copies to mark! As for quotation and bibliography styles, if and when
applicable, let’s go with the standard APA norms.
Also, when uploading your file, name the file starting with your family name, followed
by your first initial. Eg: Floyd, George, 2nd Assignment.doc.
Any submission that does NOT follow this procedure will be subjected to a 10%
penalty.
To locate the submission page, click on the Assignment 2 link. This link is located on

Assignment Evaluation
Your mark on this assignment will be communicated to you within a week after
submission. Essay will be marked based on the following set of criteria:
1. General contextualizing of the issue treated
2. Coherence of the arguments presented
3. Demonstration of the interconnections between course elements and the key
elements of the story you are commenting on.
4. Quality of synthesis and conclusion
5. Stylistics, spelling & punctuation
Please note that each and every green or red underlined typo picked up by Microsoft
Word’s Spellcheck feature will result in a marking penalty of 1% up to a maximum of 20%
of the total mark.
You will also be penalized if your submission is excessively long, so keep it as concise as
possible!
PLAGIARISM: Any direct copy-pasting from an external source not clearly indicated as a
quotation or properly cited, will automatically cancel your submission and result in a mark
of 0. The VERY last thing we expect from this assignment is for you to demonstrate to us
that you know how to copy paste material straight from the module and into your answer.
Would be kind of useless for us to ask you such a mechanical response, wouldn’t it? Your
task therefore is to explain YOUR answer to us as if you would to your Mom, for instance.
Use a narrative tone as if YOU were the prof and wanted ME to understand your point of
view. We want this course to be grounded, to help you appreciate how media work and
operate in Canada. ROTE LEARNING is NOT what I want to develop in my students. I aim
at forming your judgment, your understanding, your opinion of the Canadian media
universe.

Special note for Our Special Friends
Notice to those who get a kick out of living dangerously by submitting their
assignment a few minutes before the deadline: do NOT even think of using such lame
excuses as “my computer crashed”, “all the lights went out in my building”, or “been
totally depressed ever since the Sens have officially been eliminated from the playoffs”.
And yet, I cannot remember an assignment where I did not receive at least 3 such emails. Boggles the mind.
Smart people do NOT put off their work until the last minute. It sends the wrong
signal. Always err on the safe side and get your work done early. That way if the lights
do indeed go off in your flat, you’ll have enough time to install solar panels to get your
power back.
So…in case there is still some lingering ambivalence in your mind with regard to where
I stand vis-à-vis deadlines: they’re NON-negotiable, NON-excusable. As professionalsto-be, you have to plan your deliverables as if they were a flight you have to catch.
You will not last long in the business world if people cannot rely on your delivering the
content you are responsible for on time.
It is a jungle out there…so be smart and act accordingly.
