Summer 2020
Survey of Art History I – ARTH 241A
1. Individual Presentation
Each of you will design a PowerPoint Presentation with a voice over. The presentation should
last 10 minutes, so the cumulative time of your voice-over portion should be 10 minutes.
The presentation is to be submitted to the Blackboard a day before the presentation becomes
available for the students to review. See the syllabus/schedule for the assigned topics and
submission deadline.
Instructions for recording a voice-over:
1. Create a PPT slide.
2. Click INSERT.
3. Select AUDIO from the drop-down menu
4. Select Record.
Format, length, and content. Your presentation should last 10 minutes. It should be
accompanied by a PowerPoint with the VOICE OVER.
The first page of your PowerPoint Presentation should have your name and your topic. In the end
of your presentation you should summarize all the information on the Summary page. You also
have to include a bibliography page. Note that you cannot just copy and paste the information
from the sources without putting it in quotation marks. In other words, the text on your PPT
should be your own. If you are using somebody else’s text, you have to cite it.
Your PPT should be submitted via BlackBoard a day before your presentation (see the schedule).
In the body of your presentation, you should discuss:
◼ brief biographical sketch of the artist (if known)
◼ formal qualities and stylistic characteristics of selected artwork,
◼ the circumstances of its creation,
◼ its function,
◼ medium/material,
◼ narrative content, and
◼ its historical/cultural significance.
Please, consult outside sources to prepare a successful presentation, just make sure to cite your
sources.
Your PowerPoint presentation will be graded by your classmates who are required to fill a peer
review form for each presentation.
Here are the peer review rubrics:
Subject. Was the presentation informative? Did it have a clear focus? (0-20 points)
2
Organization/Clarity. Was it easy to follow? Was there a rational plan with effective
transitions? (0-20 points)
PowerPoint Presentation. Was it effective, clear, coherent? (0-10 points)
Mechanics: Presentation had no misspellings or grammatical errors (0-10 points):
Discussion questions. Were they effective, interesting, engaging? (0-20 points)
Total (please, calculate the total number of points):
Comments: Write comments relevant to this particular presentation addressing BOTH its
strengths and weaknesses, and suggestion for improvement.
Discussion Questions. Each presentation should end with 2 detailed discussion questions about
the image. The questions should not be factual, in other words, these questions should spark a
discussion rather than prompt your peers to reiterate the facts.
For example:
Artwork: Venus of Willendorf
Factual question: Under what circumstances was this work discovered and where it is located
now?
Discussion question: Due to the lack of written records, the scholars cannot determine the precise
function and meaning of this work. However, they have advanced multiple theories. For
example, it was argued that this work was a fertility idol (due to exaggerated body parts that are
related to reproductive function); dolls (small scale), first self-portraits (particular angle as if the
artist is looking down at her own body), or even prehistoric version of pin-up girls (taken by the
male members of the tribe during the long hunting trips). Which of these theories do you find
more plausible? Please, explain your position.
Discussion questions should be answerable, that means they should be based on the information
from your presentation and should not require any additional research on the part of the students
who are responding to your questions.
For example: Michael S. Bisson criticized the theory by Catherine McCoid and LeRoy
McDermott that this type of prehistoric figurine was created as self-portraits. Do you agree with
him? Explain your position.
Unless you have explained in your presentation Bisson’s critique, the students cannot really
answer this question without consulting outside sources, which is not the point of this particular
assignment.

Method of Assessment. The presentation is worth 80 points. I will email the comments to the
presenter and post numerical results on the Blackboard within two workdays after the
presentation. No late presentations will be accepted, because we are on a very tight schedule.
However, if a student misses his/her presentation due to a valid, DOCUMENTED reason, this
student will be allowed to present on a different topic (however, depending on the schedule, I
could be the one grading the whole presentation). If your whole presentation (presentation and
discussion) lasts less than 10 minutes, a certain number of points (depending on the actual length
of your presentation) will be deducted from your grade: -5 points for each minute.
2. Moderating Discussion – 2% (20 points)
On the day of the presentation I will create a separate folder for each presentation within
Presentations/Discussions folder on the BB.
Each individual presentation folder will include the following:
◼ Presentation PowerPoint with the Voice Over
◼ Presentation Peer Review Form (to be submitted by your classmates)
◼ Link to Presentation Discussion Forum
I will upload the Presentation PPT and will create a discussion forum for each individual
presentation before 9 am on the day of the presentation.
The discussion forum will have two discussion threads based on two discussion questions from
the presentation.
The students are required to participate in the discussion on the day it is posted. I understand that
this is an asynchronous course, thus each of you will be responding at different times, however, I
also require the presenter to monitor and lead the online discussion throughout the day. Thus, I
think that it is fair that the presenter is required to check in no less than 3 times during the day
from 10 am to 5 pm.
The presenter has to respond to students’ comments and answer the questions (if any). This task
is graded by me and is worth 20 points.
The students can still respond to the presentation after 5 pm (however, I really urge you to make
an effort and to respond during the day), but the presenter is not required (but he/she can
certainly do this!!!) to respond to these late comments (I will be monitoring the late comments).
3. Presentation Peer Reviews – 18% (180 points)
Class presentations start on May 26 to provide you with enough time to conduct your research
and make an effective PPT. Usually we will have 2-3 presentations on presentation days. You
are to submit a separate peer review form for each presentation. This assignment is worth 10
points (If you are the presenter, you do not have to submit the form, you will receive 10 points
automatically).
You are in charge of another student’s grade: thus, I would like you to take this assignment
seriously. You will provide a numerical value for each presentation (1 point) and will evaluate
the strengths of the presentation (2-3 sentences, 3 points), its weaknesses (2-3 sentences, 3
points), and the ways to improve the presentation (2-3 sentences, 3 points).
This assignment is due by the end of the day of the presentation, no late submissions will be
accepted because I have to provide a feedback to the presenter in a timely manner.

4. Discussion Participation – 18% (180 points)
Each presentation will have a dedicated discussion forum with two discussion questions posted:
the questions are based on the presentation, so you have to look at it and listen to the voice over
before answering.
You are to answer both discussion questions (3 points per question), reply/respond to at least one
comment left by another student (2 points), and reply/respond to a comment left for you (2
points).
I also encourage you to ask the presenter the follow up questions if something is not clear to you.
Technically, you do have till the end of the day to respond, however, since the presenter will be
required to check in 3 times from 10 am to 5 pm on the day of the presentation I am encouraging
you to respond as soon as you can (the presentations will be made available at 9 am). You will
not lose any points if you participate in the discussion after 5 pm, however, I think that it would
be better to engage with your classmates in real time. I will grade and close the discussion forum
the following day.
