INTL 102 University of California Discrimination in COVID America Paper Please write 9 pages reflexive paper about Discrimination in COVID America. The question of Why is this relevant to me? Please image that you are Asian, and talk about how Americans discriminate against Chinese. You need to find out about the harm that Americans have done to asians because of discrimination. This article needs to be written in the context of Chinese identity. The Powerpoint attached is from our group, just for reference. INTL102 Final Presentation
From syllabus: Students will complete an 8-10 page reflexive paper applying lessons learned
throughout the quarter about thinking and writing reflexively. That is, asking yourself WHY,
why, why, you are interested in this topic, and how your own life experiences, background,
values, and so forth influence your understanding.
Students will pick an identity-based conflict to organize their paper around. The main questions
they will answer in this paper are: What makes this an identity-based conflict? Why is it
important? How might it be transformed into identity-based cooperation? Why is this relevant to
me? This will account for 30% of their final grade.
Individual/Group Presentation – In addition to these papers and based generally on them,
students will be encouraged to join with other students within their sections and prepare a joint 7
minute Ted-like Talk for presentation in sectional sessions. These collective presentations will be
worth 15% of each students’ grade.

Sample Outline:
Begin with clear reflexive introduction
Why is this relevant to me?
o Be reflexive – talk about my why!
o Why does this conflict interest me?
o ask yourself WHY, why, why, you are interested in this topic, and how your own
life experiences, background, values, and so forth influence your understanding.
Background to conflict
o Main events (might summarize annotated chronology of conflict in chart form)
o And/or provide brief history
What makes this an identity-based conflict?
o Is there a conflicting historical narrative?
o Antagonism: Us vs Them, Blame, Attribution, Projection
o E.g. Kelman or Azar’s framework for identity-based conflicts
Why is it important?
o Consequences of conflicts
o What are the collective and individual needs that are frustrated or threatened in this
conflict?
How might it be transformed into identity-based cooperation? As examples:
o How might ARIA be used as an analytical or organizing framework
o Cooperative problem-solving techniques (i.e. integrative problem solving)
o Track 1, 2,3
o Grassroot movements
What did I learn in working on this project that is important to me?
o Be reflexive – again, summarize my why. Why I selected this topic and what, reflexively
speaking, I learned in working on this project (i.e. about yourself, your world, about
conflict and cooperation, etc.)?
Discrimination
in COVID
America
Group A02
Identity-based conflict
● Identity-based conflicts are based in people’s psychology, culture,
basic values, shared history, and beliefs.
● COVID threaten people’s basic needs and survival.
President Trump‘s Discrimination to Chinese
Asains are suffring discrimination during COVID
More than 30 percent of Americans have witnessed someone blaming Asian people for the coronavirus
pandemic, according to a new Ipsos survey conducted for the Center for Public Integrity.
Why is it important?
● Intensification of racial and social discrimination
● contributes to conflicts and social instability
● Prevents people from establishing effective communication and productive
cooperation
Why is it important?
● Threatening the individual and collective
need for security and prosperity
● Provokes aggression and violence
● The resurgence of racial and social
discrimination
Transforming COVID-19 into Identity-based
Cooperation
It requires cooperation between different factors to halt spread of the virus
There is a need to end threats and frustrations irrespective of the COVID-19
status of an individual
For instance, an end to stigmatization is essential to deal with the continued
threats and frustrations
ARIA can also be used to understand why COVID-19 discrimination exists and
enhances understanding of needs and values
The best action plan is that which will develop an integrative problem-solving
technique
Why Is This Relevant To Me?
● It is centered around a resurgence in hate towards Chinese immigrants and
Chinese-Americans due to misconceptions about the origins of COVID19.
● The conflict is very important to me
because of living in the United States
and face this rise in anti-Chinese
sentiment everyday.
Why Is This Relevant To Me?
● I realize that I have had the privilege of not facing acts of
discrimination, violence or aggression prior to the COVID19
outbreak, but now I live in fear that my friends, family, or even
myself, will be victims of a hate crime.
● My life experiences living in both China and the United States will
influence my understanding of both sides of the conflict, and
hopefully lead to a reflexive interpretation of the issues that both
parties are facing.
