Highline Community College Norwegian Prison System Research Paper ALL THE INFORMATION IS HERE< PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED ANYTHING THANK YOU This is an outlining assignment, intended to help you prepare and organize your research for your final research paper. This assignment is NOT like your "getting started for your research assignment!" For this assignment, I'd like for you to write a draft outline of your paper and list your sources. If you have not yet read the Intro to the Final Page, go back and read it. Please also read the full assignment details for the Final Research Paper. Resources to help you with writing this assignment Searching Databases (bottom of Canvas homepage) APA Guide to Citing Sources Module (bottom of canvas homepage) Finding Background Information to start our research Module (bottom of canvas homepage) Evaluating Internet Sources Module (bottom of canvas page) Thesis Statements page (in midterm section of module 3) If you haven't already, I would strongly recommend that you read through all of these modules BEFORE you start working on this assignment. Guidelines Create an outline (bullet-point format is fine) of your essay. Make sure to cite your sources as you go! This will make your job of writing the paper a lot easier because you will know where all of your important points came from. Reference 5-7 reputable sources of information for your background. (These sources should withstand the C.R.A.A.P. test). Use APA format – see module in Canvas Use APA In-text citations Include an APA style Works Cited page Please look at the rubric to ensure that you are meeting all of the grading criteria. Assignment Outline For each section below, please write 3-4 bullet points of key information that you are going to include in that section of your paper. If you have a thesis already, please state it in your introduction. Introduction – Brief Introduction to the Country, What is notable about Prison Practices in this country? End with your argument (thesis) about what the U.S. can learn from this country. - Denmark is a small Scandinavian country of about 5.5 million in northern Europe. - Danish prisons are frequently thought of as humane (Pratt 2008, Larson 2015). - Working thesis: The U.S. should emulate Denmark's practice of shorter sentences, open prisons, and self-catering, but it should be wary of Denmark's recent anti-immigrant attitudes that have led to the disproportionate incarceration of people born outside of Denmark. Description of Prison Conditions - What are the prisons like? Are they well-staffed? Are they under-funded? How many prisons are there in the country? How many people in the country are incarcerated? - In Denmark, there are three different types of prisons: closed, open, and remand. (Kriminalforsorgen 2019). - Conditions in Danish prisons vary tremendously depending on the type of facility. (Kriminalforsorgen 2019). - Principle of normalization, which states that prison conditions should be as similar as possible to conditions outside of the prison, has been very influential. (Kriminalforsorgen 1994). - People who are incarcerated cook for themselves. (Smoyer 2018, Kriminalforsorgen 2019). History of the country's prisons (this will necessarily include history of the country itself). In this section, you can also note if there were any indigenous forms of justice that were replaced with incarceration. - Denmark started using prisons for punishment in the early 1800s. - Their prison population exploded after WWII, when the country was faced with incarcerating the thousands of people who had collaborated with the Nazis during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. During this crisis, the Danish government found old camps and hospitals to use as "open prisons," prisons without fences or walls (Mathiassen 2016). - Most open prisons built walls and fences in 2006 (Mathiassen 2016). Politics surrounding Prison Policies - This will necessarily touch on the politics of the country. This may also overlap with the history section. Try not to be repetitive! In my example, I spoke about the opening of open prisons after WWII in Denmark, so I don't need to speak about it here as well, although it could definitely fall under the category of politics in Denmark. What can the United States learn from this country's penal practices? Is there anything that the U.S. should try to emulate from this country Anything that the U.S. should try to avoid? In this section, you will likely need to give some background about the U.S.'s prison conditions, history etc. Works Cited - please list all of your works cited in APA format Rubric Some Rubric (8) (1) Some Rubric (8) (1) Criteria Ratings Pts This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeProvides 3-4 key bullet points for Intro 5.0 pts Full Marks 0.0 pts No Marks 5.0 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeProvides 3-4 key bullet points for description of prison conditions 5.0 pts Full Marks 0.0 pts No Marks 5.0 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeProvides 3-4 key bullet points for history of prisons 5.0 pts Full Marks 0.0 pts No Marks 5.0 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeProvides 3-4 key bullet points for Politics Surrounding prisons 5.0 pts Full Marks 0.0 pts No Marks 5.0 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeCorrectly uses APA in text and works cited guidelines 5.0 pts Full Marks 0.0 pts No Marks 5.0 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeProvides 3-4 bullet points for what the US can learn from this country 5.0 pts Full Marks 0.0 pts No Marks 5.0 pts Total Points: 30.0
