Assignment #4- In-Depth Child Study (SLO #2)
Part 1: You will view a film and/or series of videos depicting the life of a child or adolescent
with special needs. You will imagine that you interviewed the child’s parents/caregivers and
respond to questions about the family’s experiences, including the child’s disability, the family’s
reaction to the disability, a typical day in the life of the family, and intervention goals and
outcomes. Part 2: Based on information obtained in Part 1, you will plan and develop a parent
resources guide and map community learning activities that link the child’s intervention goals
with the family’s everyday routines. This would be of great value to the family. Part 3: Based
on the information derived in the previous sections of this project, you will develop a plan that
will outline, support, etc. the child’s transition to new services, a new classroom, or whatever the
child’s next transition will be.
Detailed Instructions:
Part 1:
1. You will view a film and/or series of videos depicting the life of a child with special
needs (some film suggestions are on the last page). In the beginning of your paper,
please provide a brief summary of the film/video you watched. The summary should
be at least 7-10 sentences and describe the setting, whether it is fiction/non-fiction/based
on a true story, etc. The summary should give an overview of the film/video, with
specific details about the exceptionality/diagnosis and how the person navigated everyday
life.

You will then imagine that you interviewed the child’s parents/caregivers and respond to
questions about the family’s experiences, including the child’s disability, the family’s
reaction to the disability, a typical day in the life of the family, and intervention goals and
outcomes. Be as detailed as possible, with a paragraph for each subsection:
a. Describe your child’s diagnosis, exceptionality and how/when your child was
diagnosed.
b. What services is your child receiving, and how did you obtain those services?
c. In what ways has your family been impacted after receiving your child’s
diagnosis?
d. Describe a typical day in your family.
e. What are some intervention goals you have for your family?
Part 2 :
1. Create a list of at least five resources (i.e. websites, community resources, programs,
books, specialists, service providers, etc.) that would benefit the exceptional child and
their family. Next to each resource, explain how it ties into the child’s needs and/or goals,
and/or how it fits into the family’s daily life. If possible, try to match resources with the
geographical setting of the film. For example, if the film takes place in India and you are
recommending speech therapy, the speech therapy center you recommend should also be
located in India. Each resource is worth six points, so the more detail, the better!
Part 3:
1. Determine what the child’s next transition will be: i.e. new services, new classroom, etc.
Develop a one-page outline or plan that would help prepare the child and their family for
this transition.
For example, if the transition is a new service, you may consider including:
a.
b.
c.
d.
How will it be determined what services are needed?
Who will be helping with the transition and what will be their role?
How will goals be established, and success be determined?
Where and how often will these services take place and how will the child get
there?
If the transition is a new school, you may consider the following:
e. How will it be determined what school setting is the best fit?
f. How will goals be established and monitored?
g. What will the daily schedule be at school, and how will the child be supported
throughout the school day?
h. How will the child be transported to and from school?
