Topics: 1) Discuss Sigmund Freud’s notion of “the uncanny” in The Housemaid (Kim Ki-Young, 1960). 2) Discuss intermediality and/or media ecology in Chilsu and Mansu (park kwang-su, 1988), focusing on the class politics of the film and the problem of political and cultural representation.  3) Discuss the significance of genre and the translation of genres in the globalized South Korean film industry of the 2000s, referring to the example(s) of The Host (bong joon-ho, 2006). How should we understand the formation and transformation of film genres across historical periods and national borders? What happens to the Western or a monster film in its translation into the South Korean context?
