Academic Essay, Step One:
Literature Review
For this assignment, you will complete a literature review of the research you have found related
to your research question. This assignment asks you to write a summary of your research,
noting common trends and ideas. You do not have to explicitly make an argument. You will not
include your opinion or ideas; your only job is to survey the scholarly research that has been
done on your topic. This assignment will help you later, as you form a thesis for your larger
academic essay. Also, this paper will serve as the first section of your long essay/research
project for the course.
The overall goal of the literature review is to use at least five sources to explain the genre
expectations typical of the text you plan on analyzing for your rhetorical analysis.
Background
A literature review, or synthesis, is where you combine different sources into one. Think about a
synthesizer (keyboard). It can play the parts of many different instruments, all in one machine. A
synthesis in writing works in much the same way. When someone writes a literature review
(synthesis), they take two or more sources and use them in an interwoven way in one
paragraph or paper. The purpose is to combine multiple sources to create something new from
them. Going through the process of writing a synthesis allows the writer to reveal something
new, simply by comparing and contrasting sources related to a central theme.
Basics
Begin this assignment by selecting a central theme you wish to write about. This theme will
likely be a response or answer to your research question. Keep in mind that when writing a
literature review you shouldn’t try to cover everything from each of your sources. Instead, you
should only cover what is important to the central theme you are interested in.
Ultimately, this paper is all about showing the relationships and similarities/differences between
your sources. This will occur through summary, paraphrase, quoting, and analysis. Each of
these strategies should be used purposefully in order to do well on this paper.
The essay will be graded on how well you:
Create a research question —Is your question appropriate for a literature review/synthesis
paper? Does it introduce your paper adequately? (NOTE: This question is NOT your thesis for
the overall essay.)
Organize your essay —Does each paragraph support your thesis? Is the essay logically
structured? Do the sentences in your paragraph follow a topic sentence?
Select sources —Are your sources scholarly? Do your sources contain primary research and/or
studies? Are your sources closely related to your topic? If not, how well do you connect them to
your topic? Are your sources acceptable for a literature review? Do you have at least five
sources?
Cite sources —Are your sources correctly cited in MLA format? Do you adequately explain any
direct quotes? How well do you paraphrase the content of these sources? Do you appropriately
introduce quotes? Do you give credit when appropriate? You should include a works cited page
that includes all the sources used in your literature review.
Synthesize your materials —Do you adequately provide information to help readers understand
the sources you cite? Do you synthesize your sources to provide an overall picture of the
research in your particular sub-field?
Meet the basic criteria for the assignment —Is your paper about 4-5 pages, double-spaced,
Times New Roman 12-point font with 1 inch margins in MLA format? Did you turn your essay in
on time via Canvas? Did you proofread, edit, and revise the essay before submitting?
Tip
● Try lumping multiple sources together. Ex. Source A and Source B both agree on X,
where as Source C says that it is actually Y.
