Directions: Consider the following excerpt from a conversation between C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien – both legendary mythologists, folklorists, and novelists — regarding the value of myth, legend, and folklore:
“But,” said Lewis, “myths are lies, even though lies breathed through silver.”
“No,” said Tolkien, “they are not. […] Just as speech is invention about objects and ideas, so myth is invention about truth. We have come from God, and inevitably the myths woven by us, though they contain error, will also reflect a splintered fragment of the true light, the eternal truth that is with God. […] After all, I believe that legends and myths are largely made of ‘truth’, and indeed present aspects of it that can only be received in this mode; and long ago certain truths and modes of this kind were discovered and must always reappear.”
In an organized and well-written essay, evaluate Tolkien’s assertion about myth (as well as about legend and folklore) in light of your readings in this course. In your essay, you must use adequate textual support (quotes and/or paraphrases) from at least five separate sources to defend your thesis.
Protip 1: Your thesis should reveal the degree to which you agree or disagree with Tolkien.
Protip 2: “At least separate five sources” means that you must use information from at least five of our readings from this course. They can be either of the required novels (The Kite Runner or American Gods) (Gilgamesh) or (your choices from the Norse Edda). An online source if needed.
Protip 3: Quote when how something is said is as important as what is said; otherwise, paraphrase.
