Thesis: In society, playing is frowned upon, and considered non-essential. But what if I was to tell you that once there was one of the most influential theorist whose main source of teaching was play? According to Mr. Friedrich Froebel “Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child’s soul.” This quote alone embodies everything that Friedrich Froebel stood for. Froebel believed that each child was unique, and that each child was a blossoming young seedling. He not only coined the word Kindergarten, but was affectionally named the father of kindergarten. Without Friedrich Froebel there would be no kindergarten and where would the children have room to blossom?

According to Stateuniversity.com, The “Father of Kindergarten” Friedrich Wilhelm August Froebel was born in 1752. He was the youngest of five brothers and was born to a pastor in Germany. Tragedy struck early on for baby Friedrich when he lost his mom at just nine months. Feeling alone, Friedrich’s father quickly remarried. Once married there was very little time made for Friedrich and his siblings by the newly married couple. Growing up learning was very hard for young Froebel. Everyone thought that he was unteachable, everyone but his uncle. Froebel’s uncle took him in and noticed that Froebel, was not unteachable, but that he a different way of learning. Froebel’s uncle, unknowingly shaped and inspired one of the greatest theorist of all time.
