Tips to Consider:

  • Develop a thesis statement that is focused and that expresses the main point of your argument. Paragraphs should be organized clearly with Claim, Data, and Warrant!
  • Provide evidence from the approved outside sources (notWikipedia, Spark Notes, Gradesaver, Shmoop, etc.) that clearly supports your essay’s points.
  • On-line sources (other than those listed in your text) must be .edu, .gov, or sites linked to non-profit organizations (ex. American Cancer Society) OR to print sources (New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Parentmagazine, etc.), or sources from SM (see below). If in doubt, leave it out (use another source), OR, get the source pre-approved by the instructor.
  • Use formal diction. Do not use 1stor 2nd person pronouns, contractions, slang, or filler words. This paper should represent your best work of the semester.  It counts for 30% of your course grade.
  • Use in-text citations and corresponding works cited entries in MLA style.

Length: Minimum 5 full pages (maximum 10 pp). A Works Cited page is not included in the page minimum, but you must have one.

Format: Follow MLA format (as noted in your syllabus and in your textbooks).

Sources:

  • You must incorporate at least 4 credible sources to support your own points (3 in addition to the appropriate SMessay or 4 without the essay).  The Works Cited pages on pp. 167 and 204 would be great places to start your research, and those articles likely each have a list of sources.
  • When you incorporate these sources, you must use at least 1 summary or paraphrase and 4 short direct quotations, embedded correctly.(While you may use more than one example of short quotations and summary/paraphrase, you may not use more than 1 block quote in this essay.  If you choose to use 1 long quotation, be sure to follow formatting directions:  RW pp. 408; 465;473).
  • These approved sources must be incorporated and cited properly with parenthetical citations AND a Works Cited page.
