Informative Speech Assignment Packet
The purposes of this assignment are: to learn to inform an audience on a topic they know little about in an organized manner, and to learn how to use visual aids. You MUST demonstrate your understanding of the Public Speaking Chapters-this is practical application; this takes time. The following criteria are required for this speech:
- Prepare an informative presentation 4-5 minutes in length.
A grace period is provided before deductions occur: 15 seconds short/long = A, 16-30 = B+/B,
31-60 seconds short/long = C+/C, 60+ seconds short/long= D-F.
- Topics-you may select your own topic as long as you remember the following:
- Keep your audience’s interests in mind and justify why this topic would be of interest
- This assignment requires research
- The audience should know little about the subject
- Research-A minimum of 3 quality sources are required for this presentation. Quality, suggests avoiding the Internet and using the Databases provided at the TCCD Library (One source MUST be from a Database). Quality also suggests using materials and resources that are more sophisticated than Wikipedia. Use different types of sources.
- Research will be proven by including sources in outline next to the evidence
- State a minimum of 3 verbal source citations in your speech.
- PowerPoint–you must use a minimum of two slides (no title slides)during the presentation. The visuals may be text visuals, graphic visuals, or both. Microsoft PowerPoint(required)
Software is FREE to students for installation on personal devices or use a campus computer-
available throughout the campus. My favorites are-in the CLC (basement of the library)
and the Writing/Speech Lab (NACB 1114). Lab times are posted on the doors.
No VIDEO clips allowed.
- Paperwork- is due on the due date before you give your speech.
- Formal outline in proper format is expected-see attached outline format document.
All research should be properly inserted into your outline next to the evidence (usually sub-points). Please use BOLD print or highlightso I can easily find them.
- Basic delivery skills are required and expected. No reading, No manuscripts. Eye Contact, Gestures, Movement-if possible, Vocalics, Fluency etc…. Refer to Critique Form/Rubric for specifics.
Be prepared, using visuals aids often takes additional time. You should time your speech when practicing at home. I reserve the right to cut short your speech if it exceeds the time allotment.
Practice, Practice, Practice!
