Metacognitive check-ins

Answer each question either on paper or by copying and pasting this into a word document and typing the responses.

1. Think about the next reading tasks you have coming up in ENGWR 300. What will you read? What will be your purposes for reading?
2. Review your metacognitive check-ins from the entire class. This could be in your packet or in comments under the assignments you submitted. What strategies were most useful to you?
3. How could you use the strategies you wrote for Question 2 for your next reading task in ENGWR 300? Write out the assignment you are giving yourself. Below are some examples.

• An example assignment for a student starting a research paper:

Survey articles in the library research database. Choose four and skim them Decide which ones you will use. Carefully or generally read one of the articles. Before you read it, predict the pattern of organization. Annotate the article. Use the pattern of organization to help you identify the important points in the article.

• An example assignment for a student reading a new chapter in a book:

Survey the chapter. Identify the topic. Assess your schema. Complete a KWL chart to build your schema. Read and annotate the chapter.

4. Complete the assignment you gave yourself (you can upload a picture of a page of annotation, mapping, etc, to show this was completed.)
5. Finally, write a one-page journal typed in MLA format. In your journal reflect on how you have developed as a reader over the course of the RAD class and how you will apply what you have learned. Questions you can answer:

• Which of the reading strategies will you continue to use and why?
• How and when will you use them in your college reading now and in the future?
• Discuss your use of the reading strategies you chose for your last assignment. How did they affect your reading?
• How have you changed as a reader? What Do you feel like you have learned or accomplished? What do you still want to know or improve?
